Rat Lab — The three roles and what they ask of you
About
OverviewRat Lab is an asymmetric Roblox game where every player picks one of three roles — Lab Rat, Scientist, or Security — and each role has a completely different goal. This guide walks through what each role actually does, how to unlock tools faster, and what it takes to earn all six badges.

The three roles and what they ask of you
TableEvery player joins a side at the start of a session, and that choice shapes everything — your goal, your tools, and who you are working against.
| Lab Rat | escape the lab by clearing all three stages, using any route you can find |
| Scientist | run experiments on live Lab Rats and document mutations they produce |
| Security | chase down escaping rats and return them to a closed cell |
Playing as a Lab Rat
StepAs a Lab Rat you are always moving forward, looking for ways past each stage. The bite action is one of the key tools for opening new paths — it lets you chew straight through a wall instead of going around it. Reach the outside after all three stages and you earn the Out of the Lab badge.
- Enter the lab just showing up for the first time earns you the Test Subject badge
- Use the bite chew through a wall to open a shortcut and earn the Through the Wall badge at the same time
- Clear all three stages reaching the outside after all three grants Out of the Lab
Playing as a Scientist
TipsScientists create mutations and test them on Lab Rats. Running your very first experiment on a live subject earns the For Science badge. The harder badge, New Specimen, requires you to log a mutation that nobody else has documented before — repeat mutations do not count.
- Run at least one experiment on a live subject to unlock the For Science badge
- A mutation already in the records will not trigger New Specimen, so vary what you create
Playing as Security
StepSecurity's job is to stop rats before they get out and to retrieve any that have already escaped. The Caught One badge requires the full cycle: chase, capture, and return the rat to a closed cell.
- Chase any rat that breaks out
- Return them to a closed cell physically bringing a captured rat back into a closed cell is what completes the Caught One badge
Tool unlocks and the session timer
WarnNew tools unlock the longer you stay in a single session. The moment you leave and rejoin, that timer resets completely.

Common questions
FAQWhy did my tools disappear when I rejoined?
Tool unlocks are tied to how long you have been in a single session. Leaving the game resets that timer to zero. Stay in the same session as long as you can to keep them.
How do I get the New Specimen badge?
Play as a Scientist and log a mutation that no other player has recorded before. If the mutation is already in the records, it will not count.
