The three things you need to climb the ranks

Summary
In short Wealth alone will not move you up the ladder — you need reputation and influence alongside it.

The social hierarchy runs from ordinary laborer up through respected warrior, influential noble, and powerful feudal lord, with Shogun at the very top. Reaching each step requires all three resources working together.

  • Wealth the Ryō you earn through farming, labor, and trade.
  • Reputation built by mastering a profession or serving someone with more power than you.
  • Influence accumulated by competing with other players and pursuing power through whatever path you choose.
03

Routes to power

Table

You can serve your way up by working under powerful figures, or you can take a more aggressive path and challenge for power directly. Both are built into the game.

Service pathserve those above you and let reputation carry you toward higher rank.
Aggressive pathpursue power through force, which the game describes as dangerous but available.
Profession pathmaster a trade or craft to raise your social standing without direct conflict.
04

The Shogunate and what happens after

Tips
In short Becoming Shogun is not the end of the game — revolt is a real outcome you have to manage.

The Imperials appoint the Shogun, so reaching the top requires earning their recognition. Once you hold the title, other players can revolt against your reign. Losing the Shogunate to a revolt is its own conclusion to a cycle, distinct from simply finishing one without ever claiming the throne.

Tips worth knowing
  • Appointment comes from the Imperials — you do not simply declare yourself Shogun.
  • Finishing a cycle without becoming Shogun is a valid outcome and has its own badge to show for it.
  • Each cycle represents one complete arc of your character's life in this world.
05

The performer path

Tips

The game includes a performer profession that has nothing to do with combat or rank climbing. Instead, you take on songs and try to play them perfectly. Completing an expert-level song without mistakes is one of the hardest things a performer can do.

Tips worth knowing
  • Choose the performer profession from the available career options.
  • A perfect run on an expert song earns you the Instrument Master badge.
