Getting started: your first steps

Step
In short Mining and crafting early on unlocks everything else in the game.

When you first load in, the world around you is your resource pile. Break blocks to collect raw materials like wood and stone, then use those materials to craft tools and weapons. Quests appear on your screen and tell you exactly what to do next, so follow them when you're not sure where to go.

  1. Mine nearby blocks break everything around you to gather wood, stone, and other raw materials.
  2. Open crafting combine the materials you've collected to make basic tools and weapons.
  3. Check your quests read the active quest to find out what task to complete next.
  4. Build a base once you have enough materials, start putting up a shelter so you have a safe spot.

The Overworld and the Underworld

Table
In short Start in the Overworld to build up your gear, then activate a portal to take on the Underworld.

The game has two main dimensions to explore. The Overworld is where you start and where most of your early-game work happens. Forests, caves, and oceans fill it out, and hidden structures appear across the map. The Underworld is a separate dimension reached by activating a portal.

Overworldthe starting dimension, full of forests, caves, oceans, structures, and secrets.
Underworlda separate dimension reached only by activating a portal.
03

Combat basics

Tips
In short Gear up before you fight anything serious.

Hostile mobs and bosses appear throughout the world, often inside structures. You can use melee weapons and ranged weapons, and mobs drop items when you kill them, making combat a useful way to collect crafting materials.

Tips worth knowing
  • Craft or find both a melee weapon and a ranged weapon.
  • Kill regular mobs to collect their drops, which feed into crafting.
04

Items and how they behave

Check
In short Knowing how items stack and what happens when you drop them saves inventory headaches.

Every object you carry exists as an item inside your inventory. When you select something in your hotbar, its name briefly appears above the HUD. Some items turn into blocks or entities when you place them — boats become an entity in the world, while beds place as a group of blocks. Dropped items float above the ground as a sprite until you walk over them to pick them up, though lava, trashcans, and explosions can destroy them.

  • Most items stack to 64, but some cap at 16 and others cannot stack at all.
  • Items placed in the world (beds, boats, paintings) behave differently from items kept in your inventory.
  • Dropped items survive being submerged in water.
  • Dropped items are destroyed by lava, trashcans, and explosions.

Realms: playing with friends in a private world

Step
In short A Realm gives you a private server where only the people you invite can join.

A Realm is your own personal server instance, separate from public servers. You control who enters using invite codes, and as the owner you can kick, ban, or shut the Realm down whenever you want.

  1. Share the invite code with friends you want to join.
  2. Manage the Realm use your owner controls to kick or ban players, or shut it down.
06

Ascension: the rebirth system

Warn
In short Ascension resets your inventory permanently, so use up or store anything important before you do it.

Once you collect enough Amethyst, you can Ascend. Your inventory wipes completely on Ascension, but your Rebirths count goes up by one and stays with you forever — it never resets.

Worth watching out for
Your inventory resets when you Ascend.
Accumulate enough Amethyst to meet the Ascension requirement.
The Rebirths counter is permanent and carries through every future Ascension.
07

Leaderboard and crowns

Summary
In short Ranking in the top three of any category puts a visible crown on your character.

The game ranks every player across four categories. The top three players in any category walk around in-game wearing a crown.

  • Blocks mined tracks how much you've excavated.
  • Blocks placed tracks how much you've built.
  • Mob kills tracks enemies defeated.
  • Playtime tracks total time spent in the game.

Common questions

FAQ

Do I lose everything when I Ascend?

Your inventory resets completely when you Ascend. Your Rebirths count is the one thing that survives and grows.

How do I get to the Underworld?

You need to find and activate a portal — it does not open on its own.

Can I play with friends without randoms joining?

Yes. Create a Realm and share the invite code only with the friends you want. You can kick or ban players as the Realm owner.

What happens to a dropped item?

It becomes a floating sprite on the ground and stays there until you walk over it. Lava, explosions, and trashcans will destroy it, but water does not.
