A desrt Guide: Getting started from the garage
About
OverviewA desrt is a procedurally generated desert survival game where you start with a broken-down car in an old garage and have to keep it running while scavenging across an infinite world. This guide covers how to get moving, manage your vehicle and resources, handle emergencies, and explore without getting stranded.

Getting started from the garage
StepYou spawn next to an old garage in the middle of the desert with a car in pieces. Before you drive anywhere, look around the spawn area carefully — parts and supplies are scattered nearby. Once the car is assembled, press R to start the engine. Only then can you actually move out and begin scavenging.
- Check the garage look around your spawn point for car parts and any loose supplies before touching anything else
- Gather the parts pick up everything you need to assemble the vehicle
- Start the engine press R once the car is ready to go

Keeping the vehicle alive
CheckYour vehicle has an engine, a radiator, a fuel tank, and tyres, and any one of them can fail on you. Check liquid levels in the engine, radiator, and fuel tank often — do not wait until something breaks to find out it is empty. Spare tyres and rims are worth keeping on board because crashes can destroy them without warning.
- Fuel topped up before a long stretch with no buildings in sight?
- Oil and radiator water levels checked recently?
- Spare tyres and rims somewhere on the vehicle?
- Speed reduced on rough or uneven road?
- No sudden hard turns that could flip the car?
- Turbine engine on board extra careful driving in place, since a crash causes it to explode and scatter your gear?
Events running now or coming soon. They have fixed dates, so check them first.

Fuel and engine management
TipsFuel is the resource that stops your run dead the moment it runs out. The engine burns fuel even when you are sitting still, so every decision about when to run it counts. Empty fuel containers are worth keeping — you will need them again later.
- Collect fuel whenever you find it, even if the tank is nearly full
- Hold onto empty fuel containers rather than throwing them away
- Switching the engine off on a long downhill slope does save fuel, but restarting costs battery — the starter motor drains the battery roughly eight times faster than the electric engine draws current, and a single failed start wastes between 1.8 and 2.7 Ah, so only cut the engine on genuinely long descents
- Coasting with the engine off kills your speed immediately and forces an expensive restart to accelerate again, so do not do it between every burst of acceleration
- If you run out of fuel, search nearby buildings — containers, radiators, and engines in ruins often hold liquids
Running out of water or oil
TableWhen water runs out, you can still drive at low RPM in a higher gear while you look for more. A BAZ Radiator lasts roughly eight times longer than a VAZ or SMZ Radiator on the same engine while holding less than twice the water, so upgrading the radiator makes a real difference. Engines that need no radiator at all — Engine-H, the Electric Engine, and the Jet Engine — make water management a non-issue entirely.
| Out of water | drive at low RPM in a high gear and search nearby buildings; radiators and engines in ruins often hold liquid |
| Out of fuel | search buildings nearby; containers, radiators, and engines frequently contain usable liquids |
| Out of oil | same approach: check buildings for containers, radiators, and engines |
| Radiator upgrade | a BAZ Radiator lasts roughly 8x longer than a VAZ or SMZ Radiator despite holding less than twice the water |
| No radiator needed | Engine-H, the Electric Engine, and the Jet Engine skip water entirely |
Exploring without getting stuck
TipsBuildings are the main source of everything you need, and they are easy to miss if you drive past without stopping. Some have hidden rooms or shelves, and loot can be placed on roofs, so climbing on objects is worth doing. The Ruined Ship and bus stops tend to hold very little — skip them unless you are desperate for water, oil, or fuel.
- Search each building completely before leaving — many items hide in shelves or out-of-the-way corners
- Climb on top of objects and structures to reach higher spots where supplies can be placed
- Skip the Ruined Ship and bus stops unless you are genuinely short on water, oil, or fuel
- Avoid tornadoes
- Do not drive at maximum speed for long stretches, especially at night — the crash risk goes up significantly
- Playing with others lets you learn the mechanics faster
Inventory and item habits
TipsWhen you are scrambling after a crash or racing to top up a liquid before the engine gives out, knowing exactly where everything is on the vehicle matters. Keep your layout the same every run so muscle memory does the work.
- Weld items to the same spot on the vehicle every time so you can find them without hunting
- Stack small items together to keep space clear for larger parts
- Keep only what is useful — carrying everything you find fills space that better parts could use
- Look for upgraded tyres when you get the chance, since better grip reduces skidding and gives you more control with higher-torque engines
Glossary
Glossary- Procedurally generated
- The world is built differently every single run, so no two playthroughs produce the same layout of buildings or roads.
- Radiator
- The part that keeps your engine cool using water; if it empties, you need to find liquid or switch to an engine that does not need one.
- Starter motor
- The component that cranks the engine when you press R; it drains the battery very quickly, so failed starts are expensive.
- Turbine
- An engine upgrade that explodes on a hard crash, throwing your equipment across a wide area.
- BAZ Radiator
- A stronger radiator that lasts roughly eight times longer than a standard VAZ or SMZ Radiator on the same engine.
Common questions
FAQWhat should I do the moment I run out of fuel in the middle of nowhere?
Stop the car and search every building you can reach on foot. Containers, radiators, and engines inside ruins frequently contain fuel or other liquids.
Can I play with friends?
Yes — the game supports both singleplayer and multiplayer, and playing with others makes it easier to learn the mechanics.
