Your first day, step by step

Step
In short Get a crafting table and a basic shelter built before the ten-minute mark or you will face hostile mobs without protection.

A full day-night cycle lasts 20 real-world minutes, and nightfall arrives after just 10 of those minutes. That window is tight, so move with purpose from the moment you spawn. Every step below feeds into the next one.

  1. Punch a tree walk up to a tree and hold the attack button until a log drops, then walk over it to pick it up.
  2. Make planks open your inventory and place the log in the small 2×2 crafting area to turn it into planks.
  3. Craft a crafting table arrange four planks in a 2×2 pattern to make a crafting table, then place it on the ground.
  4. Make a pickaxe at the crafting table, use planks and sticks to craft a wooden pickaxe so you can mine stone.
  5. Build a shelter before the sky darkens, put up four walls and a roof around yourself; even a tiny one-room hut keeps mobs out.

Staying found — navigation without getting lost

Check
In short Losing your base early in the game can cost you everything, so build the habit of marking your path before you wander.

Once you have a shelter and basic tools, the temptation to explore kicks in. The world is huge and landmarks are easy to miss. A few simple habits stop a fun trip from turning into a hours-long search.

  • Write down your base coordinates before you leave note the X, Y, and Z values somewhere outside the game.
  • Drop trail markers every dozen or so blocks torches or planks work well because they stand out against natural terrain.
  • Craft a compass if you have four iron ingots and one piece of redstone it points toward the world spawn point.
  • Watch the sky for direction the sun, moon, and clouds all move from east to west, and sunflowers always face east.
03

Things that can end your run

Warn
In short Most sudden deaths in this game come from a handful of avoidable mistakes, and knowing them ahead of time is the cheapest insurance you have.

Dying drops all your items where you fell. Keep these dangers in mind every session.

Worth watching out for
Do not use a bed in the Nether or the End beds explode when activated in those dimensions.
Do not stack blocks tightly around your bed waking up inside a block causes suffocation damage and can kill you.
Do not keep a lava bucket in your hotbar unless you are about to place it one misclick can destroy your build and kill your character.
04

Finding netherite

Step
In short Netherite is deep underground in the Nether, and the trip there requires solid preparation.

The latest update placed netherite spawns in the Nether between Y 0 and Y 30. That is the deepest part of the dimension, surrounded by lava and hostile mobs, so go in ready.

  1. Build a Nether portal construct an obsidian frame and light it with flint and steel to open the portal.
  2. Dig down toward Y 0–30 once inside the Nether, work your way to the lower depths where netherite spawns.
  3. Watch for lava at every step the lower Nether is full of lava pools that can destroy dropped items instantly.
05

Repairing gear at the anvil

Table
In short Match your worn equipment to the right repair material so you are not burning rare resources on the wrong item.

An anvil lets you spend a unit repair material to restore durability to a matching piece of equipment. The table below shows which material repairs which type of gear.

Staying alive on a public server

Tips
In short Public survival servers add other players to every danger the solo game already has, so a few extra habits make a real difference.

Whether the server is friendly or more competitive, the basics below apply almost everywhere.

Tips worth knowing
  • Find out whether the server has PvP allowed, plugins that protect claimed land, or features that have been limited or changed.
  • Sneaking and un-sneaking repeatedly when you see a stranger signals that you are not hostile.
  • Trading with nearby players is one of the fastest ways to get resources and make allies on friendly servers.

Common questions

FAQ

Where do I find netherite?

Netherite spawns in the Nether between Y 0 and Y 30. Build a Nether portal with obsidian and flint and steel, enter the Nether, and mine downward to those depths.

Does my world save between sessions?

VIP servers save your world. Regular servers do not save your world when you leave.

How do I survive my first night?

Build a small shelter with walls and a roof before the first ten minutes of game time are up. If you have wool, craft a bed and sleep through the night to skip it entirely. Without a bed, stay inside and wait for sunrise.

My tool is almost broken — how do I fix it?

Use an anvil and the matching raw material for your tool's tier — for example, diamonds repair diamond tools, and iron ingots repair iron tools.
