About

Overview

Steep Steps is an extremely hard climbing game where you scale a mountain through what the developers call five stages of grief, with 1000 meters as the final goal. New stages are added every Saturday. This guide covers how to get started, how to push past the stages that keep stopping you, and how to stay sane while doing it.

What you are getting into

Summary
In short Steep Steps is built to be brutally hard, and knowing that going in changes how you approach it.

Only 1% of players ever reach 1000 meters, and only 0.001% reach it across all maps. The game itself tells you not to rage too much. Every player faces the same stages, and raw skill is the only thing that gets you higher.

  • Goal reach 1000 meters by climbing through all stages
  • Difficulty only 1% of players finish a single map; all-maps completion is rarer still
  • Updates new stages arrive every Saturday
  • Co-op the game is best played with a group of friends

The no-checkpoint challenge

Warn
In short Skipping every fireplace is its own badge challenge, so decide before you start whether you want to attempt it.

There is a badge called No Camping for completing the game without clicking a single fireplace. There is also a badge called Campless Craze for clearing Grassy Grounds without any checkpoints.

Worth watching out for
One accidental fireplace click voids the No Camping badge for that run
Campless Craze only covers Grassy Grounds

Quests and hidden ladders

Check
In short Several badges tied to quests and secret ladders give you concrete side goals beyond just gaining meters.

Alongside the main climb, the game has optional objectives that reward exploration and talking to certain characters.

  • Talk to Grandma she gives a quest that ends in the Cookie Connoisseur badge
  • Find the overgrown ladder completing its quest earns the Overgrown badge
  • Locate the cactus ladder reaching it earns Prickly Peak Pioneer
  • Track down the Ink Ladder spotting it earns the Inked badge
  • Check for the weekly ladder a Ladder of the Week is part of the Faux Auerate Ladder badge
  • Watch for April Fools content a special ladder tied to April Fools Day has its own badge

Keeping at it week after week

Tips
In short Because new content lands every Saturday, there is always a fresh reason to come back.

Steep Steps adds new stages every Saturday. Playing with friends is recommended by the developers themselves.

Tips worth knowing
  • Log in on Saturdays to see what the new stage adds
  • Play with friends whenever you can — the game itself says it is best experienced with a group
  • For a lower-stakes alternative, the developers point to Simple Steps 900 as a gentler option

FAQ

Is it really true that almost nobody finishes?

Yes — only 1% of players reach 1000 meters on a single map, and only 0.001% reach it across every map.

Can I play with a controller?

Full Xbox controller support is built in.

What are the secret ladders and do I need to find them?

The hidden ladders — including the cactus ladder, the Ink Ladder, and the overgrown ladder — are optional. Finding them earns badges but is not required to reach 1000 meters.
