In short
You fight bosses in sequence, earn a badge for each one you defeat, and the difficulty climbs steadily as you go.
Up to six players can enter a room together, so you can tackle any boss solo or with a full group. Every boss you defeat awards its own badge, and collecting all thirteen is the long-term goal the game sets for you. The description warns that something very treacherous is on the way.

Boss order and what each badge tells you

Work through the bosses the badges suggest, and use the badge descriptions as hints about what comes next.
The badges make clear that Killer, Dust, Horror, Insanity, and HYPER DUST are individual bosses you fight and defeat one at a time. Two later badges — ENRAGED and Broken limits. — have descriptions that point to an escalating challenge beyond the main roster. Rain of Dust notes that Nightmare is out of plans.

When a boss is stopping you cold, co-op and re-reading badge descriptions are options.
The game has received fixes including a reworked Distortion Boss and changed CTI requirements.
Tips worth knowing
- Bring a friend or two — a full six-player room makes bosses more survivable
- Read the badge description for the boss you are stuck on — several contain hints about conditions or alternate phases
- The HYPER DUST badge description hints at a way to push the boss further, so experiment rather than assuming the first phase is all there is
