Realistic Boiling Water Reactor Simulator Guide: Starting out
About
OverviewRealistic Boiling Water Reactor Simulator puts you in charge of a nuclear power plant at the Harrison Generating Station in Abbotsford, Canada. Your job is to meet the electricity demand from the grid, earn points, and climb through facility ranks. Up to twelve players can run the plant together, and the game includes tutorials to get you started.

Starting out — tutorial and Unit 01
StepThe game has a built-in tutorial that teaches you how to operate the reactor. Work through it before anything else, because the controls are not obvious. Once the tutorial is done, Unit 01 is the right place to practice — its operations are simplified compared to Unit 02.
- Start on Unit 01 this unit is designed for learning and has simpler controls than Unit 02.
- Meet the grid demand supply the amount of power the grid is asking for to start earning points.
- Watch your rank go up points accumulate into a facility rank, and higher ranks unlock new rooms and abilities.

Unit 01 versus Unit 02
TableThe two playable units are not interchangeable. They are aimed at different skill levels and require different approaches.
| Unit 01 | simplified operations built for learning the basics. |
| Unit 02 | advanced, in-depth controls including manual startup and manual turbine synchronization. |
| Manual startup on Unit 02 | requires teamwork; the badge for it specifically rewards cooperation, not solo play. |
| Manual turbine synchronization | described as something a random person would not be able to do, so treat it as a long-term goal. |
Reactor types available
TipsChoosing a reactor type changes what procedures you need to follow. The RBMK in particular has steps you will not find on the BWR types, including a turbine rundown test.
- Three classical BWR types are selectable as standard options.
- The RBMK type is available on Unit 02 and includes its own unique operating steps such as the turbine rundown test.
Earning points and climbing ranks
SummaryPoints flow in when you successfully deliver the power the grid is asking for. Stack enough points and your facility rank increases, which opens up more of the game. The rank ladder has many steps, from newly hired worker all the way up to the top position.
- Points earned by meeting electricity demand from the grid.
- Facility rank rises as your point total grows.
- Unlocks higher ranks open new rooms, abilities, and more.
- Rank progression the ladder runs from basic worker through reactor operator, supervisor, safety inspector, chief, and beyond.
Hazards to avoid
WarnMistakes in this game have real consequences. The badges make clear that reactor explosions, electrocution, falls, and spills are all things that can happen to you.
Co-op tasks worth doing with others
CheckThe plant supports up to twelve players at once, and some tasks are written with co-op in mind.
- Manual startup of Unit 02 requires demonstrated cooperation; this is not a solo task.
- Manual turbine synchronization on Unit 02 singled out as a skill that most players will not have on their own.
- Recovering from an offsite power cut-off an emergency scenario where the external power supply is lost and the team must protect the reactor.
- Tagging faulty equipment correctly spotting and marking broken machinery is a task your whole crew can help with.
Glossary
Glossary- BWR (Boiling Water Reactor)
- The main reactor type in the game, where water is boiled to produce steam that drives the turbines; three classical variants are available.
- RBMK
- A different reactor type playable on Unit 02, with its own unique procedures including a turbine rundown test.
- Grid demand
- The amount of electricity the power network is asking for; meeting it is how you earn points.
- Facility rank
- Your overall progression level, which rises as you earn points and unlocks new rooms and abilities.
- Turbine synchronization
- The process of matching the generator's output to the grid's frequency; on Unit 02 this must be done manually and is considered a difficult skill.
- Offsite power cut-off
- An emergency scenario in which external power to the plant is lost and the crew must keep the reactor safe.
Common questions
FAQWhich unit should a beginner start on?
Start on Unit 01. It is designed for learning and has simplified controls compared to Unit 02.
How do I earn points?
Points come from meeting the electricity demand from the grid. Those points raise your facility rank.
Can I do the Unit 02 manual startup by myself?
The badge for it rewards cooperation and is described as proof of great teamwork, so it is built around multiple players working together.
How many reactor types are there?
There are four in total: three classical BWR variants and one RBMK. The RBMK is only available on Unit 02 and comes with its own set of procedures.
