[🌊] EPIC: The Musical [OPEN TECH]
How the musical is laid out
SummaryThe musical runs for just under two hours and twenty-three minutes in total. Act 1 is about one hour and eight minutes long and covers five sagas, while Act 2 is about one hour and fourteen minutes long and covers four sagas. Each saga was originally released as a standalone EP, so they work as self-contained chapters.
- Act 1 five sagas: Troy, Cyclops, Ocean, Circe, and Underworld, totalling 20 songs.
- Act 2 four sagas: Thunder, Wisdom, Vengeance, and Ithaca, totalling 20 songs.
- Total songs 40 across both acts.
- Total runtime approximately two hours and twenty-three minutes.
- Ocean Saga position it is the third chapter of Act 1, opening with the song Storm.
Story beats to watch for in the Ocean Saga
TipsThe Ocean Saga follows Odysseus from the storm after leaving the Cyclops's island through his confrontation with Poseidon. It contains four songs: Storm, Luck Runs Out, Keep Your Friends Close, and Ruthlessness. By the end, Odysseus has lost all but one ship and most of his crew.
- Storm opens the saga in F-sharp minor with an unusual 7/8 time signature.
- Odysseus reaches Aeolia, the floating island home of Aeolus the Wind God, by having his crew fire harpoons at it to anchor the fleet.
- Aeolus gives Odysseus a bag of wind spirits but has the Winions whisper to the crew that the bag holds treasure.
- Odysseus stays awake for nine days guarding the bag before exhaustion wins; a soldier opens it and the storm returns.
- Poseidon appears and destroys all but one of Odysseus's ships, leaving him with only 43 soldiers to continue.
Key differences from Homer's Odyssey
CheckIf you already know the Odyssey, some moments in the game will surprise you. These are not errors — they are intentional departures that reshape character roles and dramatic stakes.
- Odysseus and Poseidon never meet face to face in Homer's poem; the musical invents their direct confrontation.
- Aeolus is an ordinary king in the poem, not a god the musical elevates him to a divine figure.
- The Winions replace Aeolus's children from the original myth entirely.
- Polites is barely mentioned in the Odyssey but becomes a major character in the musical.
- Scylla and Charybdis share the same strait in the poem and are treated as a linked threat; the musical separates them.
- Aeolia is described as a floating island in the poem, meaning one unattached to the seafloor Jorge interpreted this as a literal sky island, which is how it appears in the musical.
How the music was built
TipsJorge Rivera-Herrans designed the score so that specific instruments follow specific characters throughout the whole musical. He was inspired by Peter and the Wolf, where each character is tied to a single instrument. On top of that, mortal characters are backed by traditional orchestral writing, while divine characters get electronic elements layered in.
- Odysseus is represented by guitar throughout the score.
- Penelope's motif is built around the viola.
- Athena is associated with piano; Poseidon with trumpet and brass.
- Zeus enters with electric bass and drums; Aeolus with choral vocals and flute.
- When gods appear, backing vocals come from an ensemble they create — similar to the Greek chorus used in 5th-century B.C. plays.
- Mortal characters are backed by other people physically present in their scene, such as the crew or soldiers.
