Choosing your country

Table
In short Your starting country shapes how hard the early game will be, so pick one that fits your experience level.

When you enter the game you choose from every country on the map. Larger, more powerful nations are easier to get started with. Smaller nations are harder because a nearby major power can overwhelm you before you get going. On the Europe map, look for countries that hold a lot of tiles. On the World map, focus on high-population nations to fuel your resource engine.

Major powereasier early game, good for beginners
Small nation near a major powerhigh risk of being overrun early, better for experienced players
Europe map priorityfocus on countries with the most tiles to gain geographic control
World map priorityfocus on high-population nations to fuel your resource engine

First steps after spawning

Step
In short The very first thing you do after spawning is upgrade every city you own, because income and manpower come directly from city tier.

As soon as you spawn, you appear inside your own territory. Joining the ShkatulkaGames group before you play gives you a bonus of plus five percent tax, plus five percent manpower, and plus two damage. Once your cities are generating steady income, you can start thinking about expansion and technology.

  1. Join ShkatulkaGames group collect the tax, manpower, and damage bonuses before you play
  2. Upgrade all cities immediately city tier is the fastest way to grow both income and manpower
  3. Expand into neutral territory use detachments between 100,000 and 250,000 soldiers

City upgrades and the Benelux fortress

Tips
In short Upgrading cities is the single most important habit in the game, and a heavily fortified city can stop an entire enemy campaign.

Every city tier you add multiplies your income and manpower. Max-level defenses combined with artillery can stop a force of fewer than a million infantry. The Benelux area is particularly valuable to fortify: a Tier 5 Brussels can require between one million and two million infantry to capture, and when you add artillery, air, or naval support behind it, it becomes almost impossible to take.

Tips worth knowing
  • Fortify the Benelux area to Level 4 or 5 to create a near-impassable defensive anchor
  • Pair high-tier city defenses with artillery for a combination that shreds large infantry pushes
  • Enemies without planes or missile launchers will struggle heavily against maxed city defenses
05

Unit types and combat rules

Table
In short Knowing which unit beats which — and that one large force beats several small ones — decides most fights before they start.

The combat engine rewards concentrated force. One large battalion almost always defeats several smaller units even if their total soldier count is the same. Tanks hit harder than infantry but cost more, artillery wipes out infantry very quickly, and planes cost more than artillery but are significantly stronger. Infantry are cheap and still useful. If you think a neighbor is about to attack you, start researching unit types they do not have — some units need one to two minutes of research.

Infantrycheap and numerous, but weak against tanks and artillery
Tanksexpensive, but superior to infantry in direct combat
Artilleryfast at destroying infantry
Planesmore expensive than artillery, but significantly stronger in combat power
Large single forcebeats multiple smaller forces of equal total size
06

Defensive interception during an invasion

Step
In short You can stall and then punish an invasion on your tile using a simple two-unit trick.

When an enemy starts capturing one of your tiles, spawning a small unit on that tile immediately stalls the enemy's advance. Adding a second unit on the same tile turns the stall into active damage against the attacker.

  1. Spawn a 5,000-soldier unit on the invaded tile this halts the enemy's progress
  2. Spawn a second unit on the same tile the enemy now takes active damage
07

Alliances and betrayal

Tips
In short Alliances give you real military and diplomatic benefits, but you should always plan for the possibility that one will break.

When you are allied with another player, your units pass through their territory without taking damage. Breaking the alliance triggers a four-month in-game preparation period for the other side. If you plan to backstab an ally, quietly build up a large army and make sure your unit types give you a decisive edge, because the four-month warning the other player receives means you cannot rely on surprise alone.

Tips worth knowing
  • Allied units move through each other's territory without taking damage
  • An alliance break gives the other side a four-month preparation period
  • If you secretly amass a large army and combine it with the correct use of unit types, you don't need to worry too much even if the opponent has a four-month preparation period
  • Private servers let you save and load the map, making them ideal for longer sessions with friends

Common questions

FAQ

Is it better to have lots of small armies or one big one?

One large, concentrated force is stronger than several smaller ones with the same total number of soldiers — that is how the combat engine works. Consolidate your troops before any major engagement instead of sending waves of small units.

How do I stop losing cities to enemy artillery?

Upgrade your city defenses as high as you can and pair them with your own artillery. Max-level defenses backed by artillery can destroy a force of under a million infantry on their own. If the enemy is using planes or missile launchers to knock out your defenses first, research and deploy those unit types yourself so you can counter them.
