About

Overview

Ecos: La Brea drops you into Ice Age North America, 25,000 years ago, where you play as a prehistoric animal — Dire Wolf, Saber-tooth Cat, Ancient Bison, Western Horse, or Columbian Mammoth — and survive alongside or against other players. This guide covers how to unlock animals, handle the game's core mechanics, and set up your controls so you can focus on playing.

Unlocking your roster of animals

Step
In short Each animal after the starting one must be earned through a specific in-game action, so knowing what triggers each unlock saves a lot of guesswork.

You do not start with every animal available. Three of them are gated behind tasks you need to complete in the world, and one is tied to a quest. Early Access players also received bonus cosmetics for the Dire Wolf as a reward for playing before full launch.

  1. Saber-tooth Cat hunt and kill a Peccary to unlock it.
  2. Ancient Bison mark a predator using the marking mechanic (check your settings for the exact control).
  3. Columbian Mammoth complete the mammoth quest.
  4. Ecos EA skin if you played during early access, you already have a special Dire Wolf skin and a name color tied to your save; do not delete that badge or you risk losing your progress.

The ring minigame — what actually happens

Table
In short Both the attacking carnivore and the defending herbivore play the same ring minigame, and whichever side scores higher when the timer ends wins the encounter.

When a Smilodon pounces the front-left of the neck of a Western Horse or Ancient Bison, a ring minigame starts. It is a head-to-head accuracy contest — the predator is trying to outscore the prey, and the prey is trying to outscore the predator. The side with the lower score loses.

Carnivore goaloutscore the herbivore by landing rings accurately and consistently.
Herbivore goaloutscore the carnivore the same way; a win means you throw the predator off.

Spook and Flee mode for herbivores

Step
In short Understanding the two stages of the escape system tells you exactly when you can fight back and when you are locked into running.

When a carnivore attacks you, a red exclamation mark appears above your head — that is Spook mode. Your stamina rises, giving you a window to run or fight back. If you hold the jump key while a predator is marked, or hold it after being spooked, you enter Flee mode, shown by two blue exclamation marks. In Flee mode all of your attacks are disabled and your stamina climbs further, forcing you to keep running. If your stamina drops below ten percent while in Flee mode, the game automatically drops you back to Spook mode, giving you one more chance to respond.

  1. Red ! appears Spook mode is active; stamina is boosted and you can still attack.
  2. Hold jump with predator marked, or hold jump after being spooked this triggers Flee mode.
  3. Blue !! appears Flee mode is active; attacks are locked, stamina is higher, run.
  4. Stamina falls below ten percent in Flee mode game switches you back to Spook mode automatically.
  5. Flee mode stacks multiple triggers make it progressively worse than standard Spook mode.
05

Hunting as a carnivore

Step
In short The hunting minigame rewards patience — slow and steady movement with smart use of cover fills the bar without spooking the prey too early.

Carnivores can crouch near an NPC animal to start the hunting minigame. A bar appears at the top of the screen tracking how close to spooked the prey is. The goal is to creep close enough without triggering a full spook before you are ready. Running immediately scares the animal off, and nearby animals can also cause a spook.

  1. Crouch near an NPC this starts the minigame and displays the bar.
  2. Move slowly toward the prey the bar fills as you approach, but slowly if you are walking.
  3. Use trees and obstacles hiding behind them slows the bar's progress.
  4. Stop when a question mark appears if you keep moving at that moment the bar fills sharply.
  5. Do not run running ends the approach immediately by scaring the animal.
06

Marking and the Corpse Protection Bubble

Tips
In short Marking helps you track targets through cover, and the protection bubble controls who is safe to feed at a kill site.

Two mechanics shape moment-to-moment positioning for both carnivores and herbivores. Marking lets any animal outline a target in glowing white with an arrow visible through foliage. The mark fades over time but can be reapplied. Herbivores earn tracks for marking a predator, but predators do not earn tracks for marking prey. In a group, only the group leader can mark prey. After a herbivore is killed, a red protection bubble forms around the body. One group is protected inside it — they cannot be attacked by herbivores while feeding, though predators can still attack each other in there. When that group leaves, the next group to arrive claims the protection and the original group loses it.

Tips worth knowing
  • Mark any player or NPC to outline them in white and track them through foliage.
  • Herbivores earn tracks by marking predators; predators do not earn tracks by marking prey.
  • Only a group leader can mark prey for the group.
  • The red bubble after a kill protects one group of carnivores from herbivore attacks while they feed.
  • Herbivore AI such as Peccaries can still attack even outside the protected group.

Settings worth changing right away

Check
In short A few quick changes in the Ecos settings menu can fix performance issues, match your device's controls, and make it far easier to track allies and danger.

Ecos: La Brea has its own settings menu separate from Roblox's standard settings. It covers everything from volume and visual effects to how the game reads your inputs.

  • Preferred Input set this to Keyboard, Touch, or Controller to match the device you are actually using.
  • Rain Intensity turn this down or off to reduce strain during thunderstorms on slower devices.
  • Damage Flash turning this off also helps performance on lower-end devices.
  • Spooked Icons turn this on so you can see when you or nearby players enter Spook or Flee mode.
  • Group Scent keep this on so your group members' trails appear in blue, separate from the red carnivore and green herbivore trails.
  • Receive Group Invites turn this on if you want to be joinable by friends; turn it off to play solo without interruption.
08

Ancient Bison jousting

Summary
In short Jousting is a rock-paper-scissors system, and winning shifts your rank within the group rather than granting any advantage outside it.

Ancient Bison have a unique jousting mechanic where players compete to knock each other back. A green-red bar tracks who is winning. The three moves counter each other in a fixed cycle, and the winner swaps rank with the loser inside the group. This rank change does not affect Bison outside the group.

  • Block beats Jab.
  • Jab beats Shove.
  • Shove beats Block.
  • Win result winner and loser swap group rank positions.
  • Scope rank changes only apply within the group, not globally.

Common questions

FAQ

Can a herbivore actually beat a Smilodon in the ring minigame?

Yes — the ring minigame is the same for both sides, and whoever scores higher when the timer ends wins. If you are playing a herbivore and you land your rings more accurately than the Smilodon does, you throw the predator off.

How do I unlock the Ancient Bison?

Mark a predator while playing as a herbivore. The control for marking is listed in the game's settings menu.

What happens if I delete an unlock badge?

The game's badges are directly linked to your save data, so deleting one risks losing the in-game progress tied to it. Leave them alone.
