How weapons work

Tips
In short Knowing where weapons spawn and how they leave evidence is the most important skill for both killers and investigators.

Weapons turn up in cabinets, trashcans, lockers, drawers, boxes, and specific rooms. You can also receive them from certain Talents, Motives, or Masterminds. More players in a round means more weapons will appear.

Tips worth knowing
  • You can normally carry only one weapon, but Static weapons — those with a guaranteed spawn in a fixed room — let you hold two at once
  • Weapons given by a Mastermind are also treated as Static, so receiving one lets you carry an extra weapon at the same time
  • C4 and Gasoline can kill more than one player in a single move
  • Holding any weapon gives you a speed boost while it is equipped
  • If another player puts an Explosive Collar on you, you cannot use weapons or type in chat
  • Gloves are the only weapon that stay hidden in your inventory after a kill
05

Reading cause-of-death clues in the trial

Tips
In short Each weapon group produces its own set of cause-of-death clues, so the clue type tells you which group of weapons to focus on.

During the investigation phase, the cause-of-death clues found on the body point to a family of weapons rather than one specific tool. Use the groupings below to narrow your list of suspects.

Tips worth knowing
  • Bleeding and piercing clues — Knife, Gun, or Tanto
  • Blunt trauma and impact clues — Toy Hammer or Spiky Bat
  • Asphyxiation, no blood, or toxic clues — Gloves or C9 Poison
  • Shrapnel, explosion, and blast clues — C4 Explosive or Explosive Collar
  • Burnt body clue — Gasoline only
  • Charred status from Gasoline hides the victim's identity, cause of death, and time of death entirely
06

Special weapon effects that complicate investigations

Warn
In short Several weapons have active effects that can hide evidence or trap other players, and knowing them helps you spot a setup.

These effects go beyond simply killing a target.

Worth watching out for
Gasoline's Charred effect blacks out the victim's avatar completely, removing identity, cause of death, and time of death from the evidence
C9 Poison can be placed secretly on food a player who eats it dies instantly
An Explosive Collar forces the victim into a Silenced state, blocking all chat and Xebeth Pad messages
A hit from a Replica Sword or a leg shot from a Gun applies the Knocked state, slowing the target and sometimes blinding their screen

Common questions

FAQ

What happens if nobody gets killed during a round?

If no murder takes place within 17 minutes, the game executes every player still in the round.

Can one killer take out more than one person?

Yes, but only with specific weapons. C4 Explosives and Gasoline can both kill multiple players in a single use.

How is the true ending different from winning?

Winning the killing game and reaching the true ending are two separate outcomes. The true ending requires you to successfully escape the killing game rather than simply winning it.

Is the game finished?

No — CARNAGE is currently in alpha and the developers say it is nowhere near its finished state. Updates come out every one to two weeks.

How many people can play in one room?

Up to 50 players can join a single session. More players in a round also means more weapons will spawn for everyone to find.
