Cold War Guide: Reading the map before you move
About
OverviewCold War [MOUNTED MGs] is a large-scale 80-player shooter set in an alternative history where the Cold War turns into an actual conflict. You fight across destructible maps using cold-war-era weapons and vehicles in a simcade style — somewhere between realistic and arcade.

Reading the map before you move
CheckWhen a match starts, the minimap shows allied positions, enemy positions, and objectives all at once. Spawn points and vehicle locations are fixed, so once you learn them you carry that knowledge into every future match.
- Check the minimap the moment you spawn spot where teammates are clustering before you move.
- Note enemy spawn zones so you know which direction threats will come from early on.
- Find the vehicles on the map straight away knowing their positions means you can reach one quickly when you need it.
- Look for routes that keep you away from the heaviest enemy traffic, especially when repositioning.
Picking and placing your weapons
TipsThe game offers a wide range of weapons with unique features. Mounted machine guns are purpose-built for base defence. Keeping multiple weapon slots loaded means you are rarely caught without an answer at close or long range.
- Start with standard weapons and then branch out into specialist options.
- Use multiple weapon slots so you have something suited to whatever range the fight happens at.
- Place mounted MGs at chokepoints and entrances.
- Watch what the enemy is carrying — if you die to something repeatedly, think about how to counter it before the next spawn.
Surviving in a match with 80 players
StepWith 80 players on the map, open ground is dangerous. Picking spots that have more than one exit means a single enemy cannot trap you. High ground gives you a sightline advantage because enemies below are harder pressed to aim up at you while you can track them freely. Sound is also useful — gunfire tells you where a fight is happening even when the minimap is hard to read in a chaotic moment.
- Enter buildings that have multiple exits if one door is covered you still have a way out.
- Claim high ground whenever the map offers it, since shooting downward is easier than shooting upward.
- Use cover to show only part of your character when you fire, rather than stepping fully into the open.
- Listen for gunfire to estimate where enemies are moving even before the minimap confirms it.
Using vehicles without becoming a target
TableMultiple vehicles are spread across the map and let you move far faster than on foot. They also carry their own weapons, which can engage enemies at range. The trade-off is visibility — a vehicle is hard to miss.
| Best use | moving quickly to a distant objective or to reinforce teammates across the map. |
| Best use | engaging enemies at long range with the vehicle's mounted weapons. |
| Avoid | driving through areas where many enemies are concentrated, since you become an easy target. |
| Avoid | staying in a vehicle when you reach your destination; dismount and check your surroundings before moving on foot. |
Working with your team
TipsMoving toward where teammates are concentrated lets numbers do the work. The minimap makes it straightforward to see where your side is thin and where they are stacked.
- Move toward teammate clusters rather than hunting alone.
- Attack from the flank the enemy is paying less attention to — the minimap shows you where they are focused.
- When defending a base, group up with other defenders rather than spreading out individually.
- Check the minimap for numerical mismatches.
Account safety and fair play
WarnExploiting results in a permanent ban. If you believe a ban was applied unfairly, you can appeal it through the game's communications server, but submitting a false appeal will not be accepted. Associating with exploiters — even without exploiting yourself — is also bannable.
Glossary
Glossary- Minimap
- A small map displayed on your screen that shows the positions of teammates, enemies, and objectives in real time.
- Mounted MG
- A machine gun fixed to one position that fires continuously and is most effective when placed at a chokepoint for base defence.
- Simcade
- A play style that sits between full simulation and pure arcade — more realistic than a casual shooter but not as strict as a military sim.
- Spawn point
- The fixed location where your character appears at the start of a match or after being eliminated.
- Exploiting
- Using unauthorised software or glitches to gain an unfair advantage; this results in a permanent ban in Cold War.
- PvP
- Player versus player — every match puts human players against each other rather than against computer-controlled enemies.
Common questions
FAQHow do you find out where enemies are hiding?
The minimap marks enemy positions, giving you a constantly updated picture of the battlefield. You can also track gunfire sounds to estimate where enemies are moving when the map is too chaotic to read quickly.
What happens if you get banned?
Bans from exploiting are permanent by default. You can submit an honest appeal through the game's communications server, but a false appeal will not be considered.
