First things to check before you play

Check
In short A quick settings check at the main menu saves you a lot of frustration once a round starts.

The controls and display settings differ depending on whether you are on a keyboard or a controller, so sort these out before you join a room. If text looks broken or unreadable at any point, the fix is also in the options menu.

  • PC pause menu press the tilde (~) or backquote key during a game to open the pause menu.
  • Controller controls go to Main Menu, then Options, then Controls to read the full control layout before your first round.
  • Broken text if any in-game text looks garbled, open Options and disable the custom font.
  • Game-breaking bugs report them to the official group rather than ignoring them.

What each mode asks you to do

Table
In short Pick your mode before entering a room so you know exactly what you are working toward.

Each mode has a different goal.

Survivalhold out through waves of enemies; the currency earned here is tubby toast.
Collectexplore maps alone and gather custards scattered across each level.
Deathmatchfight other players and rack up the most kills.
Infectionplayers split into survivors and monsters, each side trying to outlast the other.
Versusone player takes the role of the monster and tries to win the round outright.
03

The Impossible difficulty badge in Survival

Warn
In short Missing even one of the entry conditions means the run will not count, so read these before you start.

Beating every Survival map on Impossible difficulty awards a special hat. The conditions are strict, and the game checks several things beyond just finishing the maps.

Worth watching out for
You must complete all Survival maps on Impossible difficulty.
Dying during wave 10 disqualifies the run.
In multiplayer, you must be in the room from wave 1 through wave 3 joining mid-run will not count.
Solo runs are valid, so you can attempt this alone.
04

Collecting custards and tubby toast

Step
In short Both collectibles have milestone badges, so knowing where each one comes from keeps your farming focused.

Custards and tubby toast are the two main things you accumulate over many sessions. They come from different modes, and there are badge milestones for reaching certain totals of each.

  1. Farm custards in Collect mode the milestones sit at 1,000 total and then 10,000 total, each unlocking its own badge.
  2. Farm tubby toast in Survival reaching 10,000 tubby toast unlocks the Rich badge.
  3. Visit Custard Facility jump into the custard pool on that map to unlock the Savory badge.
05

Badge targets for each mode

Tips
In short Playing with a specific badge in mind gives every session a clear short-term goal.

Each mode has at least one badge tied to performance.

Tips worth knowing
  • In Deathmatch, Getting the Hang of It unlocks after 10 kills, while Tryhard requires 50.
  • In Infection, you can earn a badge for winning as a survivor, for being the very last survivor alive in a round, or for killing 5 survivors in a single round as the monster.
  • In Versus, winning a round while playing as the monster unlocks Tubby Terror.
  • In Collect, finishing any map in under 5 minutes in Solo earns Speedrunner, and clearing every Collect map in Solo earns Tourist.
  • In Survival, finishing a round without dying earns Untouchable, separate from the Impossible difficulty badge.

Common questions

FAQ

Can I earn the Impossible difficulty badge by playing Solo?

Yes, Solo runs count just as multiplayer runs do. The key rules are that you cannot die on wave 10 and you must complete every Survival map on Impossible difficulty.

Why can't I open the pause menu on PC?

Press the tilde (~) key or the backquote key — both open the in-game pause menu.

What happens if I join a multiplayer Survival room after wave 3?

You will not be eligible for the Impossible difficulty badge in that run, because the rules require you to have been in the room from waves 1 through 3.
