Drain the Lake — The core loop from first bucket to deeper water
About
OverviewDrain the Lake is a Roblox idle game where your phone has fallen to the bottom of a lake and you need to drain the whole thing to get it back. You do that by filling buckets, draining them for tokens, spending those tokens on skill upgrades, and pushing deeper through six named checkpoints. This guide walks you through the core loop, the skill tree, the shark hazard, and how to keep moving when progress slows down.

The core loop from first bucket to deeper water
StepThe whole game runs on one repeating cycle. Fill your bucket, drain it to earn tokens, spend tokens in the skill tree, then push into a deeper layer of the lake. You can leave the game running while you do other things, because the bucket fills on its own over time.
- Fill the bucket wait for it to fill with lake water, which happens automatically
- Drain it hit the drain to empty the bucket and collect your tokens
- Spend tokens open the skill tree and put tokens into upgrades
- Go deeper move into the next layer of the lake
- Repeat keep cycling through fill, drain, upgrade, and descend
Skill tree upgrades
TipsThe skill tree is where your tokens do work. You can increase bucket capacity so each drain earns more, raise your draining speed so the cycle turns over faster, or boost the number of tokens a single drain pays out. Getting the tree fully completed earns you a badge, so every upgrade matters eventually.
- Bucket capacity upgrades increase how much water you can drain in one go
- Drain speed upgrades reduce how long it takes for the bucket to fill
- Token-per-drain upgrades increase how much you earn from each drain
- Finishing the entire skill tree is its own badge goal
Six checkpoints and what reaching them means
TableThe lake is divided into named layers, and reaching each one proves your upgrades are working.
| Shipwreck | the first checkpoint |
| Cavern | second layer |
| Mineshaft | third layer |
| Molten | fourth layer |
| Lost City | fifth layer |
| Abyss | the sixth checkpoint, the deepest layer in the game |
The shark
WarnA shark patrols the lake and can grab you while you work. Getting caught is possible even for experienced players, and surviving a bite on Hard difficulty is specifically one of the game's hardest challenges. The game also tracks how many times you escape the shark's lunge, so dodging it is worth practicing deliberately.
Chests and lifetime currency goals
CheckChests are scattered through the lake, and finding them is tracked all the way up to 1,000. Separately, the game counts every token you have ever earned across all your sessions, not just what you currently hold. Diamonds are a different resource with their own threshold.
- Find 10 chests as a first milestone, then aim for 100 and eventually 1,000
- Watch your lifetime token total it tracks to 100,000 and then to 1,000,000 regardless of spending
- Build up to holding 5,000 diamonds at once as a separate goal from token earning
- Drain 100 buckets, then 1,000, then 10,000 these tick up with normal play
- Unlock every bucket available in the game for the Bucket List badge
Finding the phone and the idle approach
SummaryThe reason you are draining the lake is to recover your phone. Reaching the Phone ending is the story goal the whole upgrade loop is pointing toward.
- Story goal reaching the Phone ending by draining deep enough
- Idle progress bucket fills automatically so the game advances while you are away
- Session style log in, drain, upgrade, then leave again if you want

- Checkpoint
- A named layer of the lake — Shipwreck, Cavern, Mineshaft, Molten, Lost City, and Abyss — that marks how deep you have drained.

Common questions
FAQWhat happens if the shark gets me?
Getting caught is tracked by the game and is required for certain badges. You can also earn a badge for surviving a bite on Hard difficulty, and another for escaping the shark's lunge ten times.
Can I make progress without sitting at my screen?
Yes — the bucket fills on its own while you are away, so the game advances even when you are not playing. Logging in to drain and upgrade every now and then is enough to keep moving toward deeper layers and eventually the phone.
I am stuck and cannot reach the next checkpoint — what should I check?
Go back to the skill tree and look for upgrades you have not bought yet, especially bucket capacity and drain speed.
