The rating ladder and its badges

Summary
In short Ranked play follows a clear progression from a provisional question mark all the way to Grandmaster, with a badge marking each milestone.

When you first play Ranked, your rating shows a question mark because it is still provisional. Once you win ten rated games in at least one time control, the question mark disappears and you earn the Ranked (S2) badge — that is when your rating is officially set. From there, the milestones are fixed numbers: reach 1500 for Elite, pass 2100 for Internet Master, and hit the game's highest rating threshold for Grandmaster. The Club Master badge is awarded when you become a titled player at the club.

  • Provisional rating shows a question mark until you win ten rated games in at least one time control.
  • Ranked (S2) question mark removed after ten wins in one time control.
  • Elite rating of 1500 or above.
  • Club Master reach titled-player status at the club.
  • Internet Master rating above 2100.
  • Grandmaster the highest rating achievable in the game.

Free play versus the Membership badge

Warn
In short Every mode and every badge except one is available without spending anything.

All five modes — Casual, Ranked, Tournament, Lessons, and AI — are free. The badges tied to gameplay are all earnable without paying. The only exception is the Membership badge, which requires purchasing any membership. It has no effect on what you can play or which other badges you can earn.

Worth watching out for
You do not need to pay to access Casual, Ranked, Tournament, Lessons, or AI matches.
The Membership badge is the only purchase-only item, and skipping it locks nothing else.

Common questions

FAQ

I have never played chess before. Can I still enjoy this game?

Yes. The Lessons mode walks you through the rules and basic tactics before you ever face a real opponent. After that, the AI mode lets you practice against a computer at your own pace.

What is the difference between Casual and Ranked?

In Casual, the result of the game has no effect on your rating, so you can play freely without worrying about your standing. Ranked games update your rating after every match, which is how you progress toward milestones like Elite and Internet Master.

When does my rating stop showing a question mark?

Your rating stays provisional — shown with a question mark — until you win ten Ranked games in at least one time control. Once that happens, the question mark is removed and you receive the Ranked (S2) badge.

What do I get for winning a tournament?

Winning a tournament earns you the Tournament Champion badge. An exclusive Champion chess set is also connected to tournament wins, though it had not launched yet at the time the badge description was written.

Do I need to pay to reach the highest ranks?

No. All Ranked games are free to play, and every rating milestone — including Grandmaster — is reachable without spending anything. The only item that requires a purchase is the Membership badge, which is separate from gameplay progression entirely.
