Before you start

Check
In short A little preparation before you load in saves you from surprises once the lights start flickering.

The game contains flashing lights, so if you have epilepsy or are sensitive to strobing effects, take a moment before pressing Play. Your control scheme is not fixed — you can check and change it in the settings menu before you begin. Because this is a very early pre-alpha build, bugs and unbalanced features are a normal part of the experience right now.

  • Read the epilepsy warning on the game page before loading in
  • Open the settings menu and confirm the controls feel right for you
  • Go in knowing that rough edges and unexpected behavior are expected at this stage

Your three goals as a prisoner

Step
In short Every run comes down to the same sequence: finish your objectives, dodge the entities, and get out.

The game casts you as a prisoner sentenced to endless trials inside a dark facility. The win condition is straightforward and the same every time.

  1. Complete objectives work through whatever goals the stage sets for you before you can leave
  2. Survive the entities avoid the mysterious creatures that hunt you while you are working
  3. Reach the exit once your objectives are done, find the way out of the facility and escape
03

Playing with friends

Tips
In short Co-op makes the harder parts of each run more manageable.

Darkest Hours supports co-op play, so you can bring friends into the facility with you.

Tips worth knowing
  • Keep track of where your teammates are at all times
  • Call out an entity the moment you spot one so nobody gets caught off guard

Dealing with bugs in a pre-alpha game

Warn
In short Bugs are expected right now — quitting and restarting is your first fix for almost anything that goes wrong.

The developers themselves flag this build as pre-pre-pre-pre-pre-alpha, which means the game is far from finished. Features may not work as intended and balance is not locked in yet. If something breaks mid-run, leave the game and rejoin — that alone clears up many common problems.

Worth watching out for
Do not assume a bug means you did something wrong; the build is intentionally rough
Restart the game if you hit a problem that stops you from playing normally

Glossary

Glossary

Pre-alpha
A very early stage of development where bugs, missing features, and unbalanced gameplay are all normal and expected.

Common questions

FAQ

Where do I find the controls?

The controls are listed in the settings menu inside the game.

Is this game safe to play if I have epilepsy?

The game itself carries an epilepsy warning because it contains flashing lights.

What do I do when a bug stops my run?

Leave the game and rejoin — that fixes most issues in this build. The game is in a very early pre-alpha state, so some bugs are simply part of playing it right now.
