Choosing your role
TableThe Wild West gives you four main paths from the start. Prospectors and hunters work mostly against the environment, while gunmen and outlaws put you in frequent contact with other players.
| Prospector | mine gold and sell it for steady income |
| Hunter | track rare animals and sell what you gather |
| Gunman | chase bounties and collect rewards for taking down outlaws |
| Outlaw | rob other players for high rewards at high risk |
Getting started on day one
StepThe Cowboy's Guide, which you open with the Tab key or through the menu, pops up automatically whenever you hit a new mechanic — duels, jobs, robbing, mining, hunting, and more.
- Open the Cowboy's Guide press Tab or use the menu button and select Guide
- Follow the Guide's notifications they appear whenever you try something new
PvP survival basics
TipsPlayer combat happens constantly in The Wild West. Remember to draw your weapon before you need to fire — most sidearms take about a second to come out, and that delay can cost you the fight.
- Small, varied movements make you harder to hit without making you completely unpredictable — find a middle ground between tiny steps and wide swings
- Only jump when you have read the enemy's fire, because jumping at the wrong moment makes you an easier target
- Roll to dodge bursts of gunfire or shotgun blasts — it makes you a smaller target than jumping does
- Helldiving (jumping and rolling at the same time) covers extra ground fast but burns stamina, and rough terrain can trip you up
- Use trees for cover at mid range, but switch sides constantly — some guns shoot straight through them
- Press V to switch to first-person view in tight indoor spaces where third-person aim gets disrupted by objects and other players
Weapon choice by distance
TableEach weapon type has a range where it shines.
| Close range | melee (Kukri Machete has the fastest attack and highest damage) or a shotgun |
| Close range alternative | fanning a revolver, which can drop most players or animals in a fraction of a second |
| Mid range | keep crosshairs on your opponent, use cover, pick weapons with lower damage drop-off |
| Long range | rifles or scoped snipers like the Spitfire Revolving Sniper or Sharps Rifle for high headshot damage |
| Long range alternative | bows, which have no damage falloff and reward skilled aim |
Private servers and fair play
WarnThe game's own rules are clear on both points. Private servers deliberately give less loot and lower payouts to keep things fair. Cheating is detected and leads to a permanent ban from the game, no exceptions.
Glossary
Glossary- Fanning
- A firing technique used at close range that unloads a revolver extremely fast, capable of dropping most players or animals in under a second.
- Helldiving
- Jumping and rolling at the same time to cover extra distance quickly, useful for chasing enemies or escaping explosives, though it costs stamina and can be interrupted by rough terrain.
- Bullet Penetration
- A property some guns have that lets them shoot through cover like trees, removing the usual defensive advantage of hiding behind them.
- Cowboy's Guide
- The in-game reference manual, opened with the Tab key or through the menu, which covers mechanics from forts to the Auction House and pops up automatically when you encounter something new.
- Outlaw
- A role focused on robbing other players, offering high rewards in exchange for high risk and frequent PvP conflict.
