Basic controls every player needs
StepControls are mostly the same across all ship types, with a few extras depending on what you are sailing. The developers themselves say the in-game manual is essential reading — open it before you do anything else.
- Move and steer W moves the throttle forward, S slows or reverses, and A/D turn left and right. You can only turn while moving forward or backward.
- Fire your guns left-click once to fire a single turret, hold left-click to fire each turret in sequence, or double-click to fire everything at once. Press 1 for High Explosive shells and 2 for Armor Piercing.
- Torpedoes press 3 to select them, then left-click to fire. A red reticle means they are still reloading, yellow means the angle is wrong, and green means ready. Press 3 again to adjust the spread.
- Repair and damage control press T to repair, which drops your speed to one quarter of your top speed and forces submarines to surface. Press U for damage control, which instantly stops fires, flooding, and rudder damage.
- Submarines only press R to surface and F to dive.
- Destroyers and destroyer escorts press Y to deploy a smoke screen, X to drop depth charges, and 4 to use ASW weapons such as Hedgehog or Squid launchers.

What each ship type does
TableEvery ship type has a clear role.
| Battleship (BB) | high health and powerful main guns. |
| Cruiser (CL/CA) | strong AP damage multipliers make these effective at hunting destroyers and providing anti-air cover for the fleet. |
| Destroyer (DD) | fast and torpedo-armed, with access to smoke screens and depth charges for anti-submarine work. |
| Aircraft Carrier (CV) | attacks using plane squadrons, but the hull is fragile. |
| Submarine (SS) | dives to ambush with torpedoes, but underwater time is limited and surfacing to repair leaves you exposed. |
Unlocking your next ship
StepEach nation has a tech tree running from Rank I to Rank X. To move forward you need to hit a credit and experience threshold on your current ship. Premium ships have a separate path that also requires Gold.
- Check the requirement look at the next ship in the tree to see how much XP you still need on your current ship and how many credits you must have in total.
- Save your credits unlocking a high-tier ship can cost millions of credits. The KM Bismarck, for example, requires 2,360,000 credits and 1,545,600 XP earned on the KM Gneisenau.
- Premium ships need Gold some ships sit outside the free tech tree path. The KM U-218, for instance, costs 600 Gold on top of requiring you to already own the KM U-96.
Commanding an aircraft carrier
StepCarrier play is the most different from anything else in the game. You have four squadron types: fighters (anti-aircraft only), multirole fighters (also capable of dive-bombing, available on US carriers from USS Ranger onward), dive bombers (best against large slow ships), and torpedo bombers. Land squadrons back on the carrier to repair and rearm them — a destroyed squadron takes longer to recover than one that lands intact.
- Switch to top-down view press V to enter the map view. Hold right mouse button to pan the camera, and press Left Ctrl if your cursor is locked to the center.
- Select a squadron press 4 through 0 depending on how many squadrons your carrier carries.
- Launch press J. There is a ten-second cooldown between each launch.
- Move press M then left-click the destination. Hold Space while setting waypoints to create a route around heavy anti-air ships.
- Attack press K then left-click a target location, or hover over a ship until the cursor turns orange and then click to enable automatic tracking.
- Land press L to send the squadron back to the carrier. Dive and torpedo bombers return automatically after dropping their payload.
Wolfpack mode
TipsWolfpack is based on the Battle of the Atlantic. The Axis team must sink all Allied transports before they reach the victory point; the Allied team wins by getting at least three transports through within one hour. Heavy rain and fog cut spotting range down to around five kilometres, so ambushes are common and communication is critical.
- Allies get free destroyers, frigates, and transports at the start, and can spend credits to upgrade to escort carriers, heavier destroyers, and cruisers.
- Axis players start with free Type VII and Type IIB U-boats plus S-boats, and can spend credits on more advanced submarines and surface raiders.
- Submarine periscopes leave a visible trail on the surface, which ASW aircraft and Hedgehog mortars can target.
- Supply submarines can spawn other submarines.
- The Bogue-class escort carrier can repair nearby Allied ships and spawn frigates and transports.
- Use team chat by typing /t before your message, and call out grid positions on the minimap to keep your team informed.
Brawling and playstyle options
TipsBrawling means closing the distance aggressively and fighting at short range. It is high risk and high reward, and only certain ships survive it reliably.
- High-tier German battleships brawl best thanks to their heavy secondary armament; at close range those guns do enormous damage.
- Among cruisers, KM Heimburg and IJN Senjō are the top brawlers at high tier, while KM Friedeburg's armor sometimes lets her fight battleships directly. Other cruisers should avoid brawling entirely.
- German destroyers like KM Z40 hold up well in destroyer skirmishes; gunboat destroyers from other nations such as HMCS Haida and Le Malin can also fight this way. Torpedo-focused destroyers should not brawl.
- The Artillery playstyle uses low-muzzle-velocity ships like USS Cleveland, USS Fargo, and USS Helena with the Superheavy Shells perk to lob shots over islands. Do not run the Super-Charges perk if you want to do this, as it increases muzzle velocity and shrinks the area you can cover.
German fleet strengths and weaknesses
TableUnderstanding a nation's broad strengths before you invest credits in its tech tree saves you from nasty surprises later.
| Secondaries | fire rate, range, and damage from German secondary guns are among the highest in the game, especially on high-tier battleships. |
| Shell velocity | among the fastest in the game, which makes it easier to hit fast-moving targets at long range. |
| Destroyer torpedoes | from Rank III onward, G7a torpedoes reload quickly and are good for area suppression, though their other stats trail most other nations. |
| Anti-air | weak across the fleet and made worse by a large turning radius, meaning carrier torpedo runs are hard to dodge or repel. |
| High-tier cruiser turrets | few turrets per ship means losing even one cuts combat power sharply, and those large gun turrets are easy targets. |

Glossary- Tech Tree
- The unlockable chain of ships for each nation, running from Rank I to Rank X, where each ship requires credits and experience earned on the previous one.
- HE (High Explosive)
- A shell type selected with the 1 key.
- AP (Armor Piercing)
- A shell type selected with the 2 key.
- Broadside
- The position where a ship's full side faces the enemy.
- Damage Control
- The emergency ability activated with U that instantly puts out fires, stops flooding, and fixes a jammed rudder, but then goes on cooldown.
- ASW
- Anti-submarine weapons — primarily Hedgehog and Squid launchers on destroyer escorts, selected with the 4 key — used to attack submarines underwater.
- Wolfpack
- A game mode based on the Battle of the Atlantic where Axis submarines and surface raiders try to stop Allied transports from reaching the victory point.
- Snorkel
- A feature on certain submarines in Wolfpack mode that lets them replenish underwater time without fully surfacing.
- Listing
- When a ship takes on a visible tilt, which in Wolfpack reduces its speed.
Common questions
FAQMy torpedo reticle is red — why can't I fire?
Red means the torpedoes are still reloading. Wait for the reticle to turn green before firing. If it is yellow, your ship is not angled correctly — turn until the reticle goes green.
How do I stop a fire or flood on my ship?
Press U to use Damage Control, which instantly clears fires, flooding, and rudder damage all at once. It has a cooldown.
How does the Allied team win in Wolfpack?
You need to escort at least three transports through to the victory point within one hour. Frigates and destroyers carry sonar that transports do not have.
What do I do as a submarine when my underwater time is almost gone?
Surface to replenish your time. Submarines with a snorkel (in Wolfpack) can replenish time without fully surfacing. Remember that pressing T to repair also forces a submarine to surface.
How do I get HMS Enterprize?
She is a Rank I sailing frigate added in the Naval 1819 game mode. Win three matches on either team in that mode and she is awarded to you. She cannot be bought with Gold.
