[Rivers] Rise of Nations
First things to do when you start
StepRise of Nations throws you into a strategy game with multiple moving parts. The game includes a Help section that explains controls and how to read the screen — go there first. Once you understand what you are looking at, try each control so it feels natural before you get into a real fight.
- Open Help read it all the way through before touching anything else.
- Try the controls practice moving and selecting units so nothing surprises you in battle.
Controls you need to know
CheckThe control scheme looks complex at first, but it comes down to a handful of inputs. Check that you can do each of these without thinking:
- Right-click and drag moves your units to the target location.
- Left-click and drag draws a selection box to grab multiple units at once.
- Hold left shift lets you move without selecting the units underneath your cursor.
- Mouse wheel, F key, or R key zooms the map in and out so you can switch between the big picture and close-up fighting.
What to check when you are stuck
CheckIf you keep losing battles or your territory stops growing, run through this list before trying something new.
- Unit count if you have too few, stop attacking and focus on upgrading production facilities.
- Enemy strength if the enemy is clearly stronger, hold your ground and build up before trying again.
- Territory size if your area is small, your production is slow; target the easiest neutral or weak zones nearby.
- Attack angle if the front you are pushing is heavily defended, look for a less defended direction or a weaker enemy entirely.
- Shift key if units are blocking your movement commands, check that you are holding left shift correctly.
- Map view if you feel overwhelmed, zoom out and reassess the whole situation before committing more units.
Glossary
Glossary- Grand strategy
- A game genre where you manage territory, armies, and resources across a large map to achieve world domination.
- Unit
- A single soldier or military group that you select, move, and direct to attack or defend.
- Production facility
- A building that generates new units; upgrading it lets you produce units faster and in greater numbers.
- Territory
- The land your nation controls; holding more territory increases how quickly your production facilities create units.
- Base
- Your central stronghold where units are produced; losing it to an enemy means losing that area of territory.
- Zoom
- Changing how far in or out the map view is, using the mouse wheel or the F and R keys, to switch between the big picture and close-up detail.
Common questions
FAQWhat is the main goal of the game?
The overall aim is to dominate the world by capturing enemy territory and destroying opposing bases.
An enemy is way too strong for me to beat. What should I do?
Do not keep throwing units at a fight you cannot win right now. Instead, turn your attention to weaker enemies or neutral zones, grow your territory, and build up your unit count until the gap closes.
Can I play with friends?
Yes — joining the same server puts you in the same game as your friends.
The controls feel awkward. Is there a simpler way to learn them?
The game's own Help section is the best place to start — read it before your first proper game. Then practice the four main inputs (right-click drag, left-click drag, left shift, and zoom) until they feel automatic.
