Your first few minutes
StepWhen you join for the first time, Cody walks you through the basics. Follow each step in order and you will leave the tutorial with real gear already in your hands.
- Talk to Cody he introduces you to Mr. Rodney, who hands you the Wooden Rod.
- Catch 3 fish at the Port Jackson docks just click into the air to cast, wait for the bite indicator, then click again and keep clicking to hold the progress bar in the green zone until it fills.
- Return to Mr. Rodney he sends you to Caster, who teaches you how to sell fish for Coins.
- Visit Finn's Supplies Shop you pick up your first backpack here at no cost.
- Visit Deckard's Boat Shop Deckard hands you the Sharpened Stick spear, also free.
- Visit your Aquarium this ends the tutorial and unlocks the rest of the game.
How to fish
CheckThe fishing mechanic never changes, no matter which island you are on or how rare the fish is.
- Click into the air to cast your line into the water.
- Watch for the bite the moment you see the indicator appear, click immediately.
- Click repeatedly to keep the progress bar inside the green zone; falling outside it slows your progress.
- Hold on until the bar is completely full that is when the fish is yours.
Currencies and where they come from
TableThree currencies run the economy. Knowing which one to spend on what stops you from running dry at a critical moment.
| Coins | earned by selling fish; used for most rods, spears, axes, and boat upgrades. |
| Gems | earned from achievement rewards, codes, and the Cloud Entertainment group bonus (250 Gems on joining); used for premium rods, gem-tier spears, axes, Ruby and Void Eggs, and special items such as the Fish Master 2.0 and Creature Locator. |
| Shards | earned through Raygan's and Mary's tavern quests; the sole currency for the Wandering Merchant's rotating weekly stock. |
Moving between islands
TipsThe game has more than ten islands, each stocked with different fish. You unlock them progressively, and some require a minimum level before you can access their tavern quests.
- Port Jackson is the starting island.
- Sail out to sea to reach new islands.
- Smuggler's Bay and its tavern keeper Mary are only accessible once you reach level 40.
- Each island has a Special Fishing Area that contains fish you cannot catch anywhere else on that island — completing those fish is required for the full index.
- New players cannot access the Ancient Shores Lost Ark quest until they have unlocked Ancient Shores itself.
- A Boat Warp Orb (900 Gems at the supply shops) teleports you back to your boat instantly.
Special Fishing Areas and how to unlock them
StepEach area is locked behind a one-time setup quest, then a repeatable obstacle course that reopens the area for one hour. You can replay the obstacle course 30 minutes after the timer expires.
- Port Jackson Crystal Mines: talk to Cody, catch a set of Port Jackson fish so he can fix the minecart, then complete one of two obstacle courses (a lilypad course or a barrel-and-log river course) to pull a lever and blast open the path. Gives one hour of access and 5 catchable special fish.
- Eruption Island Obsidian Cavern: talk to Tohan, follow his chain of NPCs to a container ship, complete one of two courses (security camera stealth or a three-stage ladder climb), retrieve ice from the vault, and give it to Tohan. A cutscene plays, the volcano cools, and the cavern inside opens for one hour with 5 special fish.
- Shadow Isles Treasure Cove: talk to Gillbert, pick a lock on a house higher up the island, grab TNT from the basement through a second lockpick, and carefully carry it to Gillbert without letting the timer hit zero or falling too fast. Dropping it at the boulder blows open the cove for one hour with 4 special fish.
- Ancient Shores Lost Ark: find the giant Goliath hidden on the island and catch 20 fish as he requests in exchange for access.
- Nidhogg's Reach complete the In The Footsteps Of Giants quest to unlock the area and earn the Valkyrie's Aegis index reward.
Weapons for hunting sea creatures
TipsSea creatures and bosses require weapons — fishing rods do nothing against them. Since update 3.5.0 you can equip one spear and one axe simultaneously.
- Spears come from Finn's Supplies Shop and the Wandering Merchant; axes come from Morgan's Supplies Shop and the Wandering Merchant.
- Spears are the primary weapon in Jackson Archipelago, but they do not work on Armored Shark variants in Timeless Tides.
- Both weapon types share a 2.5-second cooldown between hits.
- Some spears have special effects: the Chillfury and similar weapons freeze a target for 2 seconds on hit, The Thunderbolt deals 30 splash damage to nearby enemies, and the Jaded Crystal gives double loot and double XP.
- The Sharpened Stick is given free by Deckard during the tutorial.
- Completing the Shadow Isles index milestone rewards you with the Explosive Spear (450 damage, explosion and knockback) without spending Coins or Gems.
Pets and eggs
TablePets grant passive fishing rod boosts depending on their rarity — the species (Turtle, Monkey, Parrot) makes no difference to the stats, only the rarity tier does. Buy eggs from Petricia's Pet Shop in Port Jackson or Malley's Pet Shop in Smuggler's Bay.
| Egg | Cost | Best rarity available | Notable stat boost at that rarity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal Egg | 750 Coins | Epic (5% chance) | +3% Bait Size, +5% Strength, +5% Hook Speed |
| Royal Egg | 1,500 Coins | Mythic (1% chance) | +5% Bait Size, +5% Rarity Chance, +5% Hook Speed, +5% Mutation Chance |
| Ruby Egg | 1,000 Gems | Mythic (5% chance) | +5% Bait Size, +5% Rarity Chance, +5% Hook Speed, +5% Mutation Chance |
| Void Egg | 2,500 Gems | Mythic (15% chance) | +5% Bait Size, +5% Rarity Chance, +5% Hook Speed, +5% Mutation Chance |
Mutations and the fish index
TipsEvery fish species can appear in multiple color mutations and sizes, creating roughly 3,520 possible non-special combinations. Filling out all of them earns 10,000 Gems and the Dolphin Chariot. Each island also has its own index milestone that rewards Gems and unique items once you collect enough mutation sets there.
- Mutations range from Common Glow (0.85% base chance) down to Mythic Glow (0.16% base chance), with Albino sitting at 0.30%.
- Midas is the rarest mutation and only appears when you use a Transmutation Token bait, the Cephalo-Rod, or own the Dolphin Chariot — standard mutation boost stats do not raise its odds.
- For index progress, the game counts your top three mutation sets per fish species; you need three full sets per fish to complete that fish's entry.
- Completing the non-mutation part of an island's index first unlocks a 2.5x mutation rate boost for that island.
- Legendary, Mythic, and most Exotic pets add a mutation chance bonus; the Heart of the Forest Rod, Crystal Skull Rod, Key to the City skin, and Cephalo-Rod do as well.
- Special hotspots announced on the developers' social channels occasionally boost one specific mutation type.
- The Transmutation Token bait costs 1,000,000 Coins at Ilse's Bait Shop and is only in stock on a rotating weekly basis, with a limit of five per player per rotation.
Tavern quests and the Wandering Merchant
SummaryRaygan's Tavern in Port Jackson and Mary's Tavern in Smuggler's Bay both offer repeatable quests that pay out Gems or Shards. The Wandering Merchant arrives Friday through Monday each week and accepts only Shards.

Common questions
FAQHow do I open a Special Fishing Area?
Each island has a quest NPC you talk to once to do the setup, then an obstacle course you complete each time you want to reopen it. The area stays open for one hour after you succeed, and you can redo the obstacle course 30 minutes after it closes. The fish inside are not catchable anywhere else on that island, so the effort is worth it for your index.
Does it matter which pet species I pick — Turtle, Monkey, or Parrot?
No. The species is purely cosmetic; only the rarity tier changes your stats. A Mythic Turtle and a Mythic Parrot give identical fishing rod boosts.
How do I get Shards without spending Robux?
Complete quests at Raygan's Tavern in Port Jackson and, once you reach level 40, at Mary's Tavern in Smuggler's Bay. You can take up to three weekly quests across both taverns per week, and Raygan also refreshes hourly quests every 60 minutes.
Can I use a spear and an axe at the same time?
Yes, since update 3.5.0 you can carry one spear and one axe simultaneously. You cannot equip two of the same weapon type, so the combination must always be one spear and one axe.
How do codes work, and how do I redeem one?
Tap the lowest button on the right-hand sidebar in game, type or paste a code into the box that appears, and confirm. Codes are not case-sensitive, but each one can only be redeemed once per account and expire after a limited time.
What is the fastest way to boost my mutation chances?
Finish the non-mutation portion of an island's fish index first — that unlocks a 2.5x mutation rate boost for every fish on that island. On top of that, equip a Legendary or Mythic pet, use a mutation-boosting rod skin such as the Heart of the Forest Rod, and scatter a Transmutation Token bait if you have one.
