Casual vs Standard — choosing your starting mode
TableWhen you first load in, a server list lets you pick a mode. Casual and Standard play very differently.
| Casual | you lose less money on death, capped at 500, and the downed system lets you slowly revive yourself without a teammate |
| Standard | available to players at Level 15 or above without Prime, uses the bleed-out downed system where teammates must revive you before time runs out |
| Casual | XP comes from allowance only, and airdrops and blackouts are rarer |
| Standard | XP comes from kills and other mechanics, and combat zones are more frequent |
| Casual | some gamepass weapons available from spawn |
| Standard | treat every armed player as a threat at all times, since most will attack on sight unless you look too dangerous to bother |

How Infection works

- Round start a handful of randomly chosen players become Alpha Infected; everyone else is a survivor trying to reach 6 AM
- 2 AM survivors are marked on the map with a triangle exclamation mark, and Spitters begin spawning
- 3 AM Reactors and Riot Infected join the round; the screen warns both teams with the message THEY GROW STRONGER
- 4 AM Hunters and Brutes start appearing; the message THE HUNTERS AWAKEN signals this to everyone
- 6 AM any survivors still alive at this point win the round and keep all their weapons, armor, and misc items
