First steps when you join

Step

In short Learning the controls and walking the map before doing anything else makes everything easier later.

The map is large, so get comfortable moving around before you worry about goals. Running with Shift saves a lot of time crossing the world. Emoting with E is mainly for roleplay, but knowing it is there means you won't press it by accident mid-fight.

Move around use WASD or the arrow keys to walk in any direction.
Run hold Shift to move faster across the open world.
Look around drag the mouse to rotate the camera and check your surroundings.
Emote press E when you want your character to perform a pose or animation.
Explore freely walk the map, see where other players gather, and get a feel for the layout.

In short Fishing and gathering are the two reliable income sources in the early game.

You need money to make progress, and the game gives you two main ways to build it up without spending anything real. Fishing was added in version 3.2 and is one of the faster ways to earn. Gathering items from the map is the other option, and you can do both at your own pace.

Badges and what they unlock

Check

In short Badges are the main progression system, and completing them rewards you with cosmetics no one else gets without doing the same work.

Every badge has a specific condition you need to meet. Some are straightforward, others take real effort. When you complete one, you earn unique countryball skins or hats as a reward.

Check what each badge requires in-game before spending time on it.
All badges are reachable without spending real money.
The cosmetics you unlock are exclusive to badge completion.

Conquest versus roleplay — choosing your focus
