Getting into a match
StepBlox Fortress 2 runs on Xbox, PlayStation, Mobile, Tablet, and PC. The two most important controls to memorise before your first round are the class menu and the main menu shortcuts.
- Open the class menu press M during a match to pick or switch your class.
- Open the main menu press N during a match to reach settings and other options.
How classes and weapons work together
TipsBadges reveal a lot about how each class is meant to be played. The spy relies on positioning to land backstabs, scouts use speed and debuffs to chain kills, and demo-style classes have throwing weapons that apply status effects to groups.
- Spy players using the L'Escampette should target Scouts specifically — there is a badge for backstabbing one with that weapon equipped.
- The Flying Guillotine becomes much stronger when your target already has a debuff on them — apply Marked-For-Death or Bleed first, then throw for an impact kill.
- Grease is area-of-effect — a single throw can cover three enemies at once if they are grouped together.
- Once an enemy is both bleeding and covered in grease, your SMG is the cleanest way to finish them off.
- Madcap requires at least ten kills by the end of a round for the Mad Hatter badge.
Debuffs and what they do
TableThese are the status effects the game uses.
| Debuff | What it does | How it is applied |
|---|---|---|
| Bleed | Deals damage over time after the hit lands | Certain weapons that inflict a bleed on impact |
| Marked-For-Death | Makes the target take extra damage | Applied by specific class abilities or weapons |
| Grease | Covers the enemy in a sticky substance, enabling follow-up combos | Thrown grenade-style weapons hitting one or more enemies |
Staying alive — health and the Black Box
CheckOne badge in the game, Ready to Comply, requires you to use the Black Box's healing to survive an attack that would have killed you outright.
- The Black Box's healing can be used to survive an attack that would otherwise have killed you.
- If you are playing a class with Bleed, you can die and still finish off an enemy if your bleed damage was already running the Bound by Blood badge requires an enemy Speed class to die from your bleed damage after you have already been killed.
