The two sides and the basic goal

Table
In short Every round is a tug-of-war between growing Smiling numbers and Humans trying to hold them off.

Each round splits players into Humans and Smilings. Smilings grab Humans to infect them, pulling them onto the Smiling team. Humans carry weapons and try to cut down Smilings before anyone else gets turned.

Humansfight Smilings with weapons and try to stay uninfected until the round ends
Smilingsgrab Humans to infect them and grow the Smiling team until everyone has turned
Spawn areaa fixed area always present in the map where players begin each round

Playing as a Human

Tips
In short Hitting Smilings earns Smile Coins, so staying active with your weapon pays off even when you are retreating.

Humans use melee and ranged weapons to damage or kill Smilings. Each hit earns Smile Coins, with harder-hitting weapons earning more per hit. Weapons cannot be picked up a second time, so treat what you have as permanent for the round.

Tips worth knowing
  • Every hit on a Smiling earns you Smile Coins — keep swinging instead of just running
  • Standing under a block lowers your smile chance by 10%, down to a minimum of 1%
  • You cannot pick up a weapon a second time

Playing as a Smiling

Tips
In short Every successful infection makes your team stronger for the rest of the round.

Smilings grab Humans to drain their health and eventually infect them. Each tick while grabbing a Human earns 1 Smile Coin, plus 5 more on a successful infection.

Tips worth knowing
  • Every tick you spend grabbing a Human earns you 1 Smile Coin, so holds are worth finishing
  • A successful infection earns 5 extra Smile Coins on top of what you collected during the grab
05

Build and Survive mode

Step
In short A C4 night can swing the whole match, so knowing how to defuse it is the single most important piece of mode-specific knowledge.

Build and Survive runs in two phases: five minutes to build a base, then five minutes to hold it. A thick black fog surrounds the map once survival starts, and touching it turns you into a Smiling. Smilings in this mode receive Modifiers — Timebombs, Jump Potions, Tasers, and the Overseer Modifier — to tear your base apart. Any Human who dies respawns as a Smiling.

  1. Prepare phase use the first five minutes to build structures
  2. Fog awareness stay away from the black fog at all costs; contact turns you into a Smiling instantly
  3. Day 5 threat Smilings may begin carrying Firebombs that set wood alight and can burn an entire connected wooden structure
  4. Day 7 threat Mega Timebombs arrive and can destroy spike traps, electrical weapons, and sentries in a single blast; the Smiling carrying one is slowed to walkspeed 5 while holding it
  5. C4 night when a destroyed flag spawns, at 2:30 a random Smiling receives a C4 that explodes after 60 seconds and wipes all structures in a huge radius
  6. Defuse the C4 reach and defuse it before the 60-second timer runs out; the defuser earns 25 Smile Coins, experience, a forcefield, a buffed Tommy Gun, an Ice Potion, and an Invisibility Potion
06

Earning and spending Smile Coins

Check
In short Smile Coins fund everything in the shop.

Smile Coins are the only currency in the game. You spend them at the Shop — the black button with a white cart icon on the right side of your screen — on weapons, skins, Modifiers, and Animations. Skins and effects only change how a weapon looks and never alter its damage or stats. Animations change how your character holds a weapon or reacts to infection, with no level requirement to equip them.

  • Hit Smilings as a Human each hit gives coins, and higher-damage weapons give more per swing
  • Hold a Human as a Smiling you earn 1 coin per tick and 5 on a successful infection
  • Defuse a C4 in Build and Survive instant reward of 25 Smile Coins plus experience
  • Modifiers bought in the Shop affect every player in the server
07

Stages and the map layout

Summary
In short Up to four stages can be active at once, so each round's map feels different even on a map you know well.

The map always contains certain fixed areas, including the Spawn and the Fortress. On top of those, up to four stage slots fill in with rotating stages that each have their own layout and functions. The Summer update added two new maps and reworked one existing map, including a rebalanced water map for Build and Survive.

  • Fixed areas the Spawn and Fortress are always present every round
  • Rotating stages up to four stage slots fill with different layouts each round
  • Water map rebalanced in the Summer update
  • New maps two maps were added in the Summer update

Common questions

FAQ

What happens if I die in Build and Survive?

When a Human dies in Build and Survive, they respawn as a Smiling for the rest of that round.

Do skins or animations make me stronger?

No. Skins and effects only change how a weapon looks, and Animations only change how your character holds a weapon or reacts to infection. Neither affects damage or any other stat.

Stand under a block to cut your smile chance by 10%. The minimum smile chance is 1%.

What is the fastest way to earn Smile Coins as a Smiling?

Find a Human and hold your grab for as long as possible, since you earn 1 Smile Coin every tick during the hold. Completing the infection adds 5 more Smile Coins on top of whatever you collected while grabbing.
