About

Overview

CHESS! is a free Roblox board game where you play chess against other players across several modes, from casual matches with friends to competitive ranked play. Ranks run from Bronze all the way up to Grand Master, and you earn levels and coins the more you play. This guide covers how to get started, how ranked works, and how to push your rank higher.

Choosing your first mode

Table
In short Classic is the right starting point, and each other mode adds a specific twist once you have the basics down.

The game offers several modes, so picking the right one for where you are makes a big difference. Classic gives you no time pressure, which is ideal when you are still learning how each piece moves. Once you feel comfortable, the other modes each change one key thing about how a match plays out.

Classicno time limit, best for learning piece movement and checkmate
Rankedwin and loss results change your rank, with a timer running throughout
Lightningfaster than Ranked, demands quicker decisions
Pawn Battlea variation built around pawns and the king
Friends modeno rank is at stake, so you can practise or just have fun
Spectatewatch other players' live matches to study their moves

How the six pieces move

Check
In short Knowing each piece's movement and rough value stops you from making trades that hurt you.

Chess has six piece types and each one moves differently. Getting these movements into your head before your first Ranked match means you will not be surprised mid-game. Piece values give you a quick way to judge whether swapping one piece for another is a good deal.

  • Pawn weakest piece, worth 1 point; reaches the far end of the board and promotes to a stronger piece
  • Knight worth 3 points, moves in an L-shape and can jump over other pieces
  • Bishop worth 3 points, slides any number of squares diagonally
  • Rook worth 5 points, slides any number of squares in a straight line, horizontally or vertically
  • Queen worth 9 points, combines rook and bishop movement in all directions
  • King cannot be traded away; losing it ends the game

The ranked system and its six tiers

Step
In short Ranked matches affect your standing in real time, and running out of time counts as a loss just like checkmate does.

Ranked mode is where your wins and losses actually matter. Your standing climbs or drops through six tiers as results come in. The same six tiers correspond directly to the game's badges, so hitting Grand Master means earning the top achievement too. Lightning follows the same ranking stakes but on a much shorter clock.

  1. Bronze
  2. Silver
  3. Gold
  4. Platinum
  5. Master
  6. Grand Master top of the ladder and the hardest badge in the game to earn
04

Time management in Ranked and Lightning

Warn
In short Running your clock to zero is a loss, so always keep one eye on how much time you have left.

Unlike Classic, both Ranked and Lightning have timers. In Classic you can think as long as you like, but the moment you enter a timed mode that luxury disappears.

Worth watching out for
Check your remaining time running out counts as a loss
Lightning gives you even less time than Ranked
05

Levelling up and earning coins

Summary
In short Playing and winning matches is the main way to grow your level and coin total, while skins are purely cosmetic.

Levels and coins both increase as you play and win games. Skins change how your pieces and board look but have no effect on match results.

Main source of progress playing and winning matches
Skins cosmetic only, no gameplay effect
Spectating watch other players' matches
Global chat lets you talk with other players outside of matches
06

Boss encounters: Flame & Shadow and Solaris

Step
In short Two unique badges tied to specific in-game opponents mark the hardest non-rank challenges the game offers.

Beyond the rank ladder, two badges ask you to defeat named opponents. Flame & Shadow requires beating the follower of Solaris, and Blinding Opus requires beating Solaris itself. The badge description for Blinding Opus calls it a victory that favours only the strongest of minds.

  1. Flame & Shadow defeat the follower of Solaris
  2. Blinding Opus defeat Solaris

Glossary

Glossary
Checkmate
The winning condition: the opponent's king is under attack with no legal move to escape.
Castling
A special move where the king and a rook swap into safer positions at the same time, subject to specific conditions.
Lightning
A faster timed mode where you must make decisions even more quickly than in standard Ranked.
Grand Master
The highest rank in the game, reached by climbing through Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Master.

Common questions

FAQ

I have never played chess before. Where do I start?

Open Classic mode and take your time learning how each of the six pieces moves. There is no clock in Classic, so you can think through every move without pressure.

Why do I keep losing in Ranked even when I feel like I am playing well?

Ranked has a timer, and running out of time counts as a loss just like checkmate. Keep an eye on your remaining time throughout the match.

Does playing with friends count toward my rank?

No — the friends game mode has no effect on your rank, so you can experiment freely without any risk to your standing.

Can I play on mobile or console?

Yes, the game runs on PC, mobile, and console.

What are the Solaris badges and how hard are they?

Flame & Shadow is earned by beating the follower of Solaris, and Blinding Opus is earned by beating Solaris itself. The game describes Blinding Opus as something that favours only the strongest of minds.
