About

Overview

Paint or Die is a hide-and-seek game where Hiders paint themselves to match the map's colors and Seekers hunt down anyone who stands out. Every round you switch between both roles, so knowing how to play each side matters. This guide covers how to pick the right color, where to hide, and how to track down Hiders when it's your turn to seek.

How a round works

Summary
In short Each round splits players into Hiders and Seekers, then swaps the roles so everyone gets a turn on both sides.

At the start of a round, players are divided into two teams. Hiders head to the color pool, paint their avatars to match the map, and find somewhere to stay still. Seekers then search for anyone whose color doesn't fit the surroundings. When every Hider has been found, or the timer runs out, the round ends and roles switch.

  • Hider goal stay undetected until time runs out
  • Seeker goal find every Hider before time runs out
  • Color pool the area where Hiders choose and apply their paint color
  • Round end triggered by all Hiders being found or the timer expiring
  • Role swap happens automatically between rounds

Surviving as a Hider

Step
In short Your best chance of surviving is picking the right color fast, then staying completely still in a spot that matches it.

The moment a round begins, you have limited prep time before Seekers start hunting. Use that window to get to the color pool, study what colors dominate the map around you, and make your choice quickly. Once you're painted, find a surface that matches and stop moving — movement gives you away even if your color is right.

  1. Scan the map before touching the color pool, look at which color covers the most walls and floors near you
  2. Pick at the color pool choose the color that most closely matches the background you plan to hide against
  3. Find your spot move to a surface or corner where your color blends in naturally
  4. Stop moving staying still is what keeps your camouflage from breaking down
  5. Don't share hiding spots clustering with other Hiders makes everyone more visible
  6. Keep an exit in mind if a Seeker comes close, having a way to run buys you extra time
03

Three things that make a hiding spot good

Check
In short The best spots combine a matching color, a low-traffic location, and at least one escape route.

Not every corner that matches your color is equally safe. Before you commit to a spot, run through these three checks. A spot that passes all three is worth staying in; one that fails any of them puts you at real risk.

  • Does your color actually match the surface stand back mentally and ask whether you would notice yourself
  • Is the spot off the main path Seekers scanning in straight lines should not naturally land their eyes on you
  • Is there room to move if a Seeker walks toward you, you need space to escape rather than getting cornered
04

Hunting as a Seeker

Tips
In short Seekers win by scanning surfaces and watching for anyone whose color doesn't match.

Seeking looks simple, but a Hider who picked the right color and stayed still is easy to miss on a fast pass.

Tips worth knowing
  • Look for colors that don't quite match the wall or floor they're against — even a slight mismatch stands out on a careful scan
  • Watch for movement right after the round starts, since Hiders are still finding their spots and are most exposed then
  • Check corners, spots behind furniture, and darker areas
05

Adjusting your color across different maps

Tips
In short Every map has its own dominant colors, so take a few seconds at the start to figure out which shade covers the most ground.

The game runs across multiple maps, and each one has a different color scheme. A color that hides you perfectly on one map can make you obvious on the next. The safest habit is to pause at the entrance to the color pool and look outward at the map before you pick anything.

Tips worth knowing
  • Identify the single color that takes up the most space on walls and floors — that's your starting point
  • If the map mixes two colors, decide whether the floor or the walls are more visible from a Seeker's eye level and base your pick on whichever is more exposed
  • On darker maps, a dark color is harder to spot even if it isn't a perfect match
06

Cost and access

In short Every part of the game is free — all maps, all colors, and both roles are available to every player without spending anything.

Common questions

FAQ

Can I change my color after I've already picked one?

Once you've chosen your color for a round, you cannot change it until the next round begins. That's why it's worth taking a few extra seconds at the color pool to look at the map before committing.

Does the Seeker have a time limit?

Yes, each round has a timer. If the Seeker hasn't found all Hiders when it expires, the Hiders win that round.

Is it okay to hide in the same spot as another Hider?

It isn't against the rules, but it works against you. Two players in one spot are more visible than one, and different paint colors next to each other make both of you easier to notice. Spreading out gives everyone a better shot at surviving.
