First steps when you load in
StepBefore you throw yourself into a match, take a moment to set the game up properly. The topbar at the top of the screen is where most of what you need lives — controls, settings, and pass information are all there. The game uses flashy screen effects by default, so if that bothers you, turn them off in settings straight away.
- Open settings find the settings menu in the topbar and decide whether to leave screen effects on or off.
- Check controls the topbar also shows the full control list, so read through it before your first fight.
- Enable Anti Teaming turn this on in settings if you want to protect yourself from players ganging up unfairly.
- Pick a character all nine characters are available from the start, so choose one and jump in.
Starting a fight
TipsFights in this game are player-versus-player, and finding an opponent is something you handle yourself through chat. Once a challenge is accepted, the match begins.
- Type /challenge followed by a player's username or display name in chat to send them a match request.
- The match starts as soon as the other player accepts.
- If the lobby feels empty, wait a little while and try again.
How the nine characters compare
TableAll nine characters are selectable from the start without any unlocking required. Each one has a distinct style.
| Asriel | long, drawn-out attacks that deal heavy damage on each hit. |
| Asgore | strong punish potential, particularly with his later moves. |
| Undyne | aggressive moveset with solid neutral-game tools like her spear. |
| Sans | the slowest character, weakest neutral game, but strong when an opponent is already knocked down. |
| Chara (GT) | excellent combo game with many moves that chain naturally into each other. |
| Gaster | a trapper and tank who punishes opponent mistakes and gains power from Moveset Steal. |
How combat works
SummaryCombat in this game has three distinct phases. Neutral game is the standoff before anyone commits — players space, bait, and look for an opening. Combo game is what happens after you land that opening: a chain of attacks the opponent cannot easily escape. Punish game is what you do when the opponent is knocked down with low stamina, since the lower their stamina, the longer they stay on the ground and the more damage you can pile on.
- Neutral game the standoff where both players probe for an opening using spacing and baiting.
- Combo game a chain of attacks started after landing a hit or a move that causes stun or knockback.
- Punish game damage dealt to a knocked-down opponent whose low stamina keeps them grounded longer.
- Stamina the resource that determines how long a knockdown lasts; lower stamina means longer recovery time.
- Move Queue a setting in the game's options that should be turned on to make combos flow more reliably.
Playing Sans effectively
TipsSans is the slowest character and has almost no moves that work well in the neutral standoff phase. He has only three moves that can stun an opponent, and all of them are slow with long delays after use. Where he makes up for it is in punish game: once an opponent is knocked down with low stamina, his blaster moves deal damage very quickly.
- Sans has no reliable stun moves for the standoff phase.
- His blasters are your main punish tools once an opponent is knocked down and low on stamina.
Playing Gaster effectively
TipsGaster does his best work by waiting for opponents to overcommit, then punishing them.
- Turn on Move Queue in settings before playing Gaster — his combos depend on it.
- Watch for opponents who dash forward after seeing two missed LMBs, then bait them into your opener.
- Avoid using high-endlag moves raw against experienced players; use them to punish their mistakes instead.
- The Jump plus Dash technique with certain moves can help you avoid getting hit when you lack super armor — it takes practice.
- Moveset Steal is the payoff of the whole character, so do not waste the moves that set it up.
- At one HP, holding block and using a Hyper Armor move can finish the opponent before they break your block.
Kills, streaks, and fair play
WarnThe game tracks how many kills and deaths you accumulate over time, with badges marking milestones at 5, 20, 97, 200, 700, 999, 2000, and 5000 kills. Winning five kills in a public server also unlocks extra characters on private servers for players with the right gamepass. Streaks are a separate record, but the game actively watches for abuse of the streak system.
Spending money and unlocking skins
CheckEvery character is available from the start with no cost. Winning matches unlocks skins that change how your character looks, and you can check your unlock progress and any passes you own from the topbar. Passes open up features like private server options rather than making you stronger in public fights.
- All nine characters are selectable from the start at no cost.
- Skins unlock through winning matches no spending required.
- Check the topbar to see your current skin progress and any passes you hold.
- The Private Server gamepass lets you unlock extra characters like Sans Hardmode on private servers.
- Passes can be gifted to other players through the topbar.

Common questions
FAQDo I need to unlock characters before I can play them?
No. All nine characters — Asriel, Asgore, Frisk, Sans, Chara, Undyne, Jevil, Gerson, and Gaster — are available to pick from the moment you load in. You do not need to earn or buy access to any of them.
How do I start a match against someone?
Type /challenge followed by the other player's username or display name in the chat. If they accept, the match begins. If nobody is around, give it a little time and try again.
The screen effects are very bright — can I turn them off?
Yes. Open the settings from the topbar and you can disable screen effects from there. The game itself includes an epilepsy warning and recommends checking this setting before you play.
What happens if I abuse the streak system?
The game detects streak abuse and resets your streak as a result. Harassing other players too aggressively on top of that can lead to a temporary ban, so both are worth avoiding.
