Getting started in story mode

Step
In short Clearing story mode is the gate that opens every other part of the game.

When you first load in, story mode is the only option available to you. Finishing it earns the Cleared badge and unlocks Custom mode, Multiplayer, and Extras. The game is best played on a PC or console with headphones, and be aware it contains flashing lights.

  1. Pick a difficulty Easy, Normal, and Hard each award their own separate badge.
  2. Finish the run earning the Cleared badge is what switches on Custom mode, Multiplayer, and Extras.

Core minesweeper rules

Tips
In short Every decision comes down to reading the numbers and reasoning out which tiles must be safe.

THE MINEFIELDS runs on classic minesweeper logic translated into a 3D world. Each number you uncover tells you exactly how many mines touch that tile. Cross-reference neighbouring numbers to pinpoint where the mines have to be, then open the tiles you are sure are clear.

Tips worth knowing
  • A number on a tile counts only the mines directly touching it — use two or three overlapping numbers together to narrow down which tile is the mine.
  • Place a flag on any tile you are certain hides a mine so you do not accidentally step on it later.
  • When you are confident a tile is safe, open it without hesitation — a single step can reveal 40 or more numbers at once if the area around it is clear, which is how the Collateral badge is earned.
  • Clearing the whole field without planting a single flag earns the Lazy badge.

Content that unlocks after the story

Summary
In short Beating the story is the start, not the end — challenges and multiplayer provide a large amount of additional play.

Once you hold the Cleared badge, a wide set of extra content opens up. Challenges add special rule twists on top of the base minesweeper gameplay, and Multiplayer lets you tackle fields alongside other players.

  • Custom mode opened by clearing the story.
  • Multiplayer complete any field with at least two players still alive and you earn the United Effort badge; you must be one of the survivors.
  • Challenge Vol. 1 eleven distinct challenges including Fogland, Color Blind, Maze Runner, -2× Speed, Memory Wipe, Droneless Maze, Australia, Backwards Day, Australian Maze, Backwards Day + Memory Wipe, and Backwards Day + Memory Wipe + Maze, each with its own badge.
  • Challenge Vol. 2 two further challenges, No Glasses and Roman Empire, each with a badge.
  • Blitz beat the story faster than the ByteSized Studios development team to earn this badge.

Common questions

FAQ

How do I unlock multiplayer?

You need to finish story mode first. Clearing it earns the Cleared badge, which is what switches multiplayer on.

Do I need to play all three difficulty levels?

Each difficulty — Easy, Normal, and Hard — has its own badge. If you want all three, you will need to beat the story on each one separately.

How does the United Effort badge work in multiplayer?

Complete any multiplayer field with at least two players still alive at the end, and you must be one of those survivors.

Can I clear the field without ever placing a flag?

Yes — finishing the entire field without planting a single flag earns the Lazy badge.

When do the challenge modes become available?

All challenges open after you clear story mode. There are eleven challenges in Volume 1 and two more in Volume 2, each with its own badge for completion.
