Two roles, one winner
TableEach round you are assigned a role. The Sheriff has range, the Murderer has the knife. Knowing what the other role is trying to do makes you harder to beat.
| Sheriff | a gun that can drop the Murderer before they get close, so precision is everything |
| Murderer | a knife for throwing or closing in, so timing and movement decide the fight |
| Sheriff wins | land your shot before the Murderer reaches you |
| Murderer wins | survive the approach and eliminate the Sheriff with the knife |
Playing the Sheriff
TipsThe Sheriff's job is to land a shot while the Murderer is still at a distance.
- Lead your shots — aim where the Murderer is heading, not where they are right now
- If the Murderer gets close, switch to rapid fire rather than waiting for a clean single shot
Playing the Murderer
TipsEvery second you spend in the open at long range is a second the Sheriff can line up a clean shot. Your approach and your knife throw both need to be deliberate.
- Move in a zigzag pattern so the Sheriff cannot track you cleanly
- Rush in right after the Sheriff fires — that is their moment of vulnerability
- Practice the knife throw so the timing feels natural
Choosing a match format
StepTraitor Duels offers head-to-head duels as well as team modes that go up to 5v5, so up to ten players can compete at the same time. Both formats use the same Sheriff and Murderer roles.
- 1v1 head-to-head against one other player
- 2v2 through 5v5 team formats for playing with friends
