Survive a Million Monkeys drops you into endless waves of rabid monkeys and challenges you to last as long as possible. You earn Cash by killing monkeys during a run and Gems that carry over between runs, and you use both to upgrade your weapons, health, and class abilities. This guide covers controls, the two-currency system, upgrades, movement, and how to use your class skills at the right moment.
In shortFinishing the tutorial and checking your loadout before your first real run saves a lot of early frustration.
Before you join a match, spend a few minutes in the tutorial so that shooting and upgrading feel natural. When you return to the lobby, open the weapon menu and the class menu to see exactly what you are starting with. After each run, look at the results screen to note which wave you reached and how many Gems you earned, then set a target one wave further for the next attempt.
Complete the tutorialpractice shooting and upgrading until both controls feel comfortable.
Check your loadout in the lobbyopen the weapon menu and class menu before queuing.
Review results after every runrecord the wave you reached and the Gems you picked up.
Set a single-wave improvement goalaiming one wave further each time builds your record steadily.
In shortLearn the V and C upgrade keys early, because using them mid-run is just as important as aiming.
The controls below apply when you have the starting Survivor class selected. If you switch to a different class, the abilities bound to G, X, and Q will change, so check the skill names shown on screen whenever you swap.

In shortCash disappears at the end of every run, so spend it all before the match ends; Gems persist and fund your lobby purchases.
Getting these two currencies mixed up is the most common early mistake. Cash is earned by killing monkeys and is gone the moment the run ends, so there is no reason to save it for the lobby. Gems survive between runs and are what you spend in the lobby to unlock weapons and class abilities.
Tips worth knowing
Cash is only useful inside a run — spend it on weapon tiers, health, grenades, and barricades before the run ends.
Gems carry over to the next run — use them in the lobby to unlock weapon tiers and class skills.
Before buying anything, confirm which currency the menu is asking for.
05
Weapon tiers and health upgrades
Warn
In shortUnlocking a weapon tier in the lobby and upgrading your weapon mid-run are two separate actions that use different currencies.
Weapons have four tiers. In the lobby you spend Gems to unlock each tier, but unlocking a tier does not mean you start the next run at that tier — you still have to spend Cash with the V key during the run to climb through the tiers. Keep this distinction clear or you will enter runs expecting a stronger weapon than you actually have.
Worth watching out for
Lobby unlock (Gems) and mid-run upgrade (Cash + V key) are completely separate steps.
Starting a run after a lobby unlock does not skip the in-run upgrade process.
06
Movement and avoiding being surrounded
Tips
In shortKnowing your escape route before you need it is more valuable than perfect aim.
Standing still and firing in one direction is the fastest way to get surrounded. Keep a mental picture of open space nearby and drift toward whichever direction has the fewest incoming monkeys, funneling the horde behind you rather than around you.
Tips worth knowing
Before entering a corner or dead end, make sure you can see the way back out.
When monkeys approach from more than one side, relocate before the circle closes completely.
Target fast-moving monkeys and anything directly in your path first; do not chase distant stragglers.
In co-op, split sight lines with teammates so the group is not all shooting the same cluster.
When to use grenades, barricades, and your ultimate
Check
In shortSave grenades and barricades for moments that genuinely need them so you still have Cash left for upgrades.
Grenades and barricades cost Cash, which is the same pool you need for weapon and health upgrades. Your ultimate charges up as you kill monkeys and is free to use once the on-screen indicator says it is ready.
Throw a grenade only when a cluster of monkeys is packed tightly togetherusing it on a single distant monkey wastes upgrade money.
Place a barricade when you need to slow a pursuing group, then immediately plan your next position rather than standing next to it.
Check the ultimate ready indicator on screen before activating.
09
Class choices
Tips
In shortRead a class's skill descriptions and unlock conditions in the lobby before switching, since each class changes what G, X, and Q do.
You pick your class before entering a match, and the choice shapes your role for the entire run. The Survivor is the starting class. Other classes such as the Medic and Engineer offer different playstyles — the Medic supports healing and the Engineer deploys turrets that fire automatically.
Tips worth knowing
Check the skill names shown on screen after switching classes — G, X, and Q map to different abilities for each class.
Read the unlock conditions for each class in the lobby before spending Gems.
10
Playing with others
Summary
In shortA full room handles the monkey horde far more effectively than a solo run, and a room holds up to 25 players.
The game is designed around group play. Solo runs hit a wall quickly because the number of incoming monkeys is simply too high for one person to manage. Up to 25 players can share a room, and coordinating sight lines is the most immediate benefit of having teammates.
Room size up to 25 players per session.
Solo difficulty single players are quickly overwhelmed as wave counts climb.
Firepower benefit groups process clusters faster and more completely than one person can.
Coordination tip split directions so teammates cover different angles rather than the same one.

Common questions
FAQ
How many players can be in one room?
A single room holds up to 25 players.
Can I play solo?
You can queue alone, but the monkey numbers become unmanageable as the waves go on.
What is the difference between unlocking a weapon in the lobby and upgrading it mid-run?
Lobby unlocks cost Gems and make a weapon tier available to you, but you still start each run at the base tier. During the run you press V and spend Cash to actually climb through the tiers you have unlocked.
How do redeem codes work?
Entering a code in the game's code input screen gives you Gems. Each code works once per account, and some codes expire, so use any code you find promptly.
When should I switch classes?
Read the skill descriptions and unlock conditions in the lobby before spending Gems on a new class. The Medic and Engineer are among the classes available to consider.
