Blade clashing and blocking — the combat core

Step
In short Managing combat stamina through well-timed blade clashes and frequent blocks is what keeps you alive in a fight.

Melees are the foundation of combat. Every melee gives you two core tools: blade clashing and blocking. Combat stamina is a separate bar from your normal stamina and shows up on the left side of your screen whenever you swing or block. Letting it run dry leaves you defenceless, so the whole fight is about preserving it.

  1. Swing just before CHAIN attacks this triggers blade clashing, which makes you invulnerable to that swing. Your crosshair circle turns red while it is active; CHAIN must connect while it is red for the effect to count.
  2. Go for a perfect block when you can the timing window is under one second, but a perfect block returns far more combat stamina than a regular one.
  3. As soon as the block cooldown clears, block again keeping that cycle going is the main way to stay in a prolonged fight.
  4. Use an energy drink if you are in trouble it grants unlimited combat stamina for a short window.
  5. Passive stamina regeneration kicks in when you step back from the fight, and it regenerates faster if CHAIN is in his Enraged or Phase 2 state.

QTEs and CHAIN's special attacks

Warn
In short Failing CHAIN's Choke QTE kills you instantly, so recognising the windup and preparing your input is critical.

Certain weapons trigger QTE cinematics that ask you to spam a button or hit a specific one within a short window. CHAIN also has his own QTEs baked into his abilities. After any QTE lands, CHAIN enters a brief state where he ignores further QTEs, so do not waste a special attack in that window — you can still block normally during it.

Worth watching out for
The Choke attack starts with a long, obvious windup when you see it, prepare to handle the QTE immediately. The opening swing deals a small amount of damage, but failing the QTE itself kills you outright.
Sidestep has CHAIN blinking around you at high speed to attack from every direction; it happens more in Enraged and Phase 2, so expect it more as the fight goes on.
Right after a QTE, hold off on special attacks CHAIN is immune to them briefly, and you will waste the move.

Guns — when to shoot and when to hold back

Table
In short Guns deal good damage and earn deflection fast, so use them selectively rather than freely.

Every gun in the game has limited ammo, and most can be restocked by crafting at the workshop. Guns also build CHAIN's Deflection passive faster than any other weapon — Deflection reduces the damage he takes when he is being hit by too many people or shot at frequently. One gun sidesteps that entirely.

Double Barrelthe only gun that ignores CHAIN's Deflection passive, making it the most reliable for dealing damage in a crowded fight.
Deaglecannot have its ammo restocked at the workshop, so each shot is permanent.
All other gunsammo can be crafted at the workshop, so they are more sustainable, but heavy use still raises CHAIN's Deflection.
Deflection gainhighest of any weapon type, so frequent shooting reduces how much damage your whole team is dealing.

Earning and keeping your points

Check
In short Surviving the night and dealing damage are your biggest point sources, but scraps are the safest backup when you are not in a fight.

Points are the main currency in Survival and buy items from the shop. You can carry up to 2,000 points at once, and items save when you leave — but only if you exit in safe conditions. Leaving mid-combat, during an execution, on the death screen, or during a Blood Moon clears your items. Dying before you leave also blocks you from rebuying items on return, though anything you are wearing stays with you (vests excluded).

  • Surviving a night pays +100 points; dying still pays +30.
  • Damage dealt to CHAIN converts directly to points check the end-of-night overview to see exactly how much you earned.
  • Helping repair the generator during a Power Outage adds +10 points at the end of the night.
  • Surviving a Thunderstorm pays +30 points, and surviving a Blood Moon pays +80.
  • Collect scraps whenever you are not fighting, crafting, or inside a building the cap is 1,000 scraps, worth up to 280 points when sold.

Common questions

FAQ

What happens to my items and points when I leave?

Points save up to the 2,000 cap, and items save as long as you leave under safe conditions — meaning not during combat, an execution, the death screen, or a Blood Moon. If you died earlier in the same session, your items stay but you cannot repurchase them when you return, except for whatever you are wearing when you leave (vests do not count).

Why does my damage seem to stop affecting CHAIN when I shoot a lot?

CHAIN builds up a passive called Deflection when he is shot at frequently or hit by too many players at once, and it reduces how much damage he takes. The Double Barrel is the only gun in the game that bypasses Deflection entirely.

What is the best way to recover combat stamina mid-fight?

Block as soon as the block cooldown clears — every block gives back some stamina, and a perfect block (timed within under a second) gives back considerably more. If you are running dangerously low, an energy drink will give you unlimited combat stamina for a short period.
