Journey to the Watchtower Guide: Your first ten minutes
About
OverviewJourney to the Watchtower (Hard Mode) is a survival game where you cross a deadly desert on foot, dodging lethal light, the Watchtower's attacks, and sandworms, all while managing your stamina. You die, you upgrade, and you go farther next time — the loop repeats until you reach the Watchtower. This guide covers how to survive longer, spend upgrades wisely, and know when to rebirth.

Your first ten minutes
StepWork through the tutorial completely before your first real run, and check that the controls and camera sensitivity feel right on your device. On your first attempt, do not sprint the whole way — watch how stamina drains, when it recovers, and what the screen and audio do just before something dangerous happens. When the run ends, stay on the results screen long enough to read your distance, the Insanity you earned, and what upgrades cost right now.
- Finish the tutorial confirm controls and camera sensitivity on your device before you start
- First run: observe stamina notice when it drops fast and when it recovers
- Watch for warning signs track how the screen, sound, and look of the Watchtower change before an attack
- Read the results screen note your distance, Insanity earned, and current upgrade costs
- Change one thing next run swapping several things at once makes it impossible to know what helped
Stamina management
TipsRunning out of stamina in an open stretch means you cannot react when an attack arrives. Sprint in short bursts, let stamina recover during normal movement, then sprint again. If you keep running dry, check whether unnecessary side-steps or holding sprint by accident are the real cause — more stamina upgrades will not fix a habit problem. On mobile especially, moving the camera while running can keep the sprint button held down without you noticing, so glance at the stamina bar regularly.
- Sprint in short bursts, never hold it until the bar empties
- Always keep enough stamina to change direction at least once
- Cut unnecessary sideways movement — wasted steps burn stamina for no gain
- Figure out whether you ran dry from habit or from low capacity before you upgrade
Three types of danger and how to handle them
WarnDeadly light and Watchtower attacks both give signals before they hit — changes in brightness, audio, or how the Watchtower looks on screen. Reacting to those signals is more reliable than counting seconds. When a run ends, pin the cause to one of three categories: you missed the warning, you saw it but moved too late, or you saw it in time but had no stamina left. For sandworms, scan for an escape route and nearby cover before you step into open sand, so you are not searching for a path after the worm has already appeared.
Choosing between stamina, speed, and Insanity gain
TableThe three upgrades are stamina, speed, and Insanity gain. None of them is universally the best choice — what matters is which one addresses why you are currently failing. When unsure, consider stamina first, then speed, then Insanity gain only once your runs feel stable. After buying anything, do the same stretch of the run again and check whether the problem actually improved.
| Stamina | useful when you run out of stamina before you can react to danger |
| Speed | useful when you have stamina to spare but cannot reach the next safe point in time |
| Insanity gain | worth considering only once runs are stable and upgrade costs are the main bottleneck |
| Buying multiple upgrades at once | makes it impossible to tell which one made the difference |
| Post-upgrade check | run the same section again and verify the problem is actually smaller |
Picking Spirits and Sins
CheckSpirits and Sins are rolled randomly and each one modifies your run in a different way — movement, survival, or resource gain. Before you lock in a choice, read the full description: the trigger condition, the numbers, and what it costs to reroll.
- Read the entire effect description, including trigger conditions and exact numbers
- Check whether the trigger condition matches how you actually run an effect you cannot trigger consistently is useless
- Ask whether it addresses your stamina, speed, or Insanity problem before you accept it
- Check the reroll cost and what you give up the next result is not guaranteed to be better
When to rebirth
StepRebirth gives you long-term permanent improvements in exchange for resetting some of your progress. While your record distance is still growing run by run, there is no need to rebirth yet. Before you confirm, read the rebirth screen carefully to see exactly what resets and what carries over as a permanent gain. After rebirthing, rebuild survival-critical stats first rather than rushing back to your old record.
- Keep running normally if your record is still growing, rebirth can wait
- Stop and assess if several serious attempts in a row end at the same spot, that is a sign
- Read the rebirth screen know which items reset and which become permanent before you tap confirm
- Write down current stats and active Spirits and Sins you will want the comparison afterward
- After rebirthing, restore stamina and speed before anything else
Safety reminders
WarnSome items in the game can be purchased with Robux. The core loop — running, upgrading, and rebirthing — is fully playable without spending anything. Paid items can make progress easier but are not required to reach the Watchtower.

Common questions
FAQCan a complete beginner make progress?
Yes. Upgrades carry over after every death, so each run builds on the last. The key is to focus on identifying one failure cause per attempt rather than trying to reach the Watchtower straight away.
Can I play alone?
You can run, upgrade, and rebirth entirely on your own. If other players are in your server, keep in mind that their stamina, speed, and Spirit effects will be different from yours, so their route is not a reliable safety guide for you.
Why does the game look different from videos I have watched?
Updates, server conditions, and device differences can all change how things appear. For attack timings, prices, and effect values, always trust what is displayed in your current session over anything shown in an older video.
Do I need to buy anything to reach the Watchtower?
No purchase is required. Running, upgrading stamina, speed, and Insanity gain, rolling Spirits and Sins, and using rebirth are all available without spending Robux. Paid items can speed things up, but they are optional.
Which upgrade should I buy first if I have no idea?
Start with stamina unless you are certain that is not the problem. If your stamina is holding up fine but you keep failing to reach the next safe point in time, switch your attention to speed. Save Insanity gain upgrades for when your runs feel stable and the main obstacle is simply saving up fast enough.
