The Backrooms is a horror exploration game where you noclip out of reality and fight your way through 32 levels to reach one of three endings. Those 32 levels split into 17 numbered main levels (Level 0 through Level 16) and 15 sub-levels without numbers. This guide covers setup, how to push through individual levels, what to watch out for, and how the save system works.
In shortGetting your avatar settings right before you start will save you collision headaches later.
The game tracks your progress through badges — one awarded for each level you clear. Deleting a badge from your Roblox profile wipes that level's progress permanently, so leave every badge alone. Your avatar setting matters too: the game needs R15 to handle collisions correctly, and UGC characters cause problems, so swap them out before you even enter.
Avatar is set to R15 and no UGC character is equipped
You know that badges are your save filedeleting one resets that level
Servers hold between one and eight players, so solo and co-op both work
You have braced for occasional bugs or lag, since the game is still in active development

How the 32 levels are structured
Summary
In shortKnowing which levels are numbered main levels and which are sub-levels helps you understand where you are in the run.
The 32 levels are not all numbered in a straight line. Seventeen of them are main levels running from Level 0 to Level 16. The other fifteen are sub-levels with names but no numbers — places like The End, Neon Paradise, and Corn Maze — and they appear between the main levels. Clearing all of them leads to one of three distinct endings.
Main levels Level 0 through Level 16, seventeen in total
Sub-levels fifteen levels with names but no numbers, appearing between main levels
Endings three in total: the false ending, the true ending, and a hidden ending
Progress each level you finish gives you a badge that records your save

Most levels ask you to explore and observe, but a handful have specific steps. These are worth memorising before you reach them.

Level Thirteen, Lights Outyour flashlight will not help much here; use objects in the environment to hide from entities instead

Any contact with an entity removes you from the Backrooms immediately
In Lights Out, hiding behind objects beats using your flashlight
In the Playrooms, keep your distance from Partygoers

When you get stuck
Check
If a level has you stumped, the solution is almost always somewhere in the space around you. Run through this list before assuming something is broken.
Check whether the level has a known mechanicsix buttons, a house exit, or an item to hand over
Look for arrows and notes on the walls, especially in The Gallery
If you are in the Waterpools, movelingering causes the layout to change
In Lights Out, stop relying on your flashlight and look for objects to hide behind instead
Confirm your level badges are intact; a missing badge means your progress for that level is gone

Common questions
FAQ
How does the game save my progress?
Every time you finish a level, the game gives you a badge on your Roblox profile. That badge is your save — if you delete it, your progress for that level disappears. Keep every badge you earn.
How many levels are there, and how are they divided?
There are 32 levels in total. Seventeen of them are numbered main levels running from Level 0 to Level 16, and the remaining fifteen are sub-levels with names but no numbers. Clearing all of them opens the path to one of three endings.
Can I play with friends?
Yes, each level's server holds between one and eight players, so you can team up with friends.
Do I need to spend Robux to finish the game?
No. All 32 levels and all three endings are completely free. There are no paid features blocking your progress.
What devices does the game run on?
The game supports PC, mobile, and console. VR is also available in an experimental state.
What do I do when the game feels broken or frozen?
Leave the server and rejoin. The game is still in active development, so bugs and lag do happen. A fresh server fixes most of these issues.
