The two roles and what each one does
TableEvery match splits players into two sides. Civilians need to stay alive for the full round. The Killer needs to take out every Civilian before time runs out. Civilians earn Points by using abilities, healing teammates, surviving for at least a minute, or winning a round, and spend those Points in the shop on cosmetics. Surviving rounds or using abilities also builds up a score that promotes the top player to Killer next round, though you can turn that off with Kind Mode in the settings.
| Civilian goal | survive the entire round |
| Killer goal | eliminate every Civilian before the round ends |
| Points | currency Civilians earn through play and spend in the shop |
| Killer promotion | the Civilian with the highest score becomes the next Killer |
| Kind Mode | a settings toggle that stops you from accumulating Killer-promotion score |
How the ability deck works
StepAt the beginning of every round, each Civilian receives three cards, each holding two randomly chosen abilities. You pick one card, and that pair of abilities is what you have for the entire round. If you have turned on Automatic Deck Selection in settings, the game skips the choice and just shows you one card.
- Check your cards read all three before committing to one
- Pick a card your chosen card's two abilities are locked in for the round
- Note synergies some ability pairs combine into a stronger version when both conditions are met, so check whether your two abilities interact
Ability reference for Civilians
CheckThere are fifteen standard abilities and four synergy abilities available in the deck pool. Each has side conditions worth knowing before you commit to a card that contains it.
- Speed boost raises your walk and sprint speed for six seconds but roots you in place afterward; also briefly speeds up nearby Civilians
- Trap places a trap on the floor that triggers on whoever steps on it, including you; if you are the last Civilian standing, it fires instantly and deals heavy damage to the Killer
- Block must be timed to an incoming hit; a successful block negates damage, heals ten health, gives a speed boost, and briefly locks the Killer's ability; a missed block adds extra endlag
- Minigame pass four Quick Time Events to multiply your speed; this cooldown cannot be shortened by other abilities; the synergy version extends it to ten QTEs and adds damage resistance at the cost of taking extra damage if you are hit mid-minigame
- Pad place a speed-boost pad on the floor for teammates; the Killer can destroy it since it only has 18 HP; the synergy version turns it into a healing pad that restores 2 HP per second
- Heal restore 10 HP to Civilians in front of you plus another 10 HP over the following ten seconds
- Invisibility go invisible for five seconds, but sprinting and stamina regeneration are disabled; getting hit cancels it early
- Dash launch yourself forward using 30 stamina; dropping below 25 stamina before using it causes you to ragdoll; hitting the Killer with the dash knocks them back and costs five extra stamina
Special Rounds and what to expect from each
SummaryA Special Round appears every three rounds. When one is selected, a notice cycles through the options at the top of the screen and a jingle confirms the choice. Most Special Rounds cut everyone's score in half, though two of them do not.
- Two Killers two Killers spawn, but all damage they deal is halved
- Buffed Killer one Killer gains extra health, speed, and stamina while every other player becomes a Civilian
- Hazard a map hazard spawns after 20 seconds; it instantly kills Civilians on contact, heavily damages the Killer, and teleports toward the nearest player
- Damage mode every Civilian gets a deck with two hard-hitting abilities that deal double damage but no longer stun; the Killer's health is shown on screen
- Free-for-all everyone becomes a Civilian and fights each other last-player-standing style; a wall of fire closes in to prevent hiding, though it does not affect the map itself
- Hot potato one player carries a potato that drains 1 HP per tick at an accelerating rate; reaching zero causes that player to explode and resets the tick speed
Keeping up with updates
WarnThe developers have stated outright that nothing in Die of Death is final and that changes should be expected. The most recent update, called the Fashionably Late Update, reworked nearly every part of the game.

Common questions
FAQDo I get to choose which abilities I play with?
You choose one of three cards presented to you at the start of each round, but the two abilities on each card are assigned randomly. If you enable Automatic Deck Selection in settings, even the choice is removed and you get one card automatically. Either way, the specific abilities available will be different every match.
What happens every three rounds?
A Special Round triggers, which changes the rules of that match. A notice appears at the top of the screen showing which type was selected. Most Special Rounds reduce everyone's score by half, though two of the available types do not carry that penalty.
Can I avoid becoming the Killer?
Yes. The player with the highest score at the end of a round becomes the next Killer. You can also turn on Kind Mode in the settings, which stops your score from building toward Killer promotion entirely.
Why does the game feel completely different from my last session?
The developers update Die of Death frequently and have stated that nothing in the game is final. The Fashionably Late Update alone reworked nearly every part of the game. Checking the in-game update log when you load in is the fastest way to catch up on what changed.
