Your first run — what to do before chasing the ending

Check
In short Spending your first run learning the layout and controls puts you in a much better position for every run after.

Rushing straight for the exit your first time usually ends badly because you won't know where the exits are or where you can hide. Before you start collecting anything, figure out which map you're on — the bright mansion (Light On) or the dark one (Light Out) — since the escape steps are completely different. Once you know that, look for the exit and note any low passages or corners you can duck into when things get tense.

  • Identify your map check whether you're in the bright mansion or the dark map before doing anything else
  • Find the exit spot the green exit door on Light On, or note the exit candidates on Light Out
  • Scout escape routes find low passages, corners, and tight spaces you can slide through to break line of sight
  • Practice your movement try dashing, crouching, and sliding somewhere safe before the monster gets close
  • Set your volume you need to hear footsteps and breathing, so don't play on mute
  • Treat the first run as a scouting trip, not a win attempt

Escaping the bright mansion — Light On

Step
In short Collect the wire cutter first by solving the cube puzzle, then grab the key and card key before approaching the green exit.

Light On has a fixed sequence of items to collect, and knowing the order stops you from wandering. Start by locating the room with the green exit door and the three coloured platforms — knowing where these are saves time later. The cube puzzle unlocks the wire cutter, which you need at the exit along with a key and a card key.

  1. Find the room locate the green exit door and the platform room with three coloured stands
  2. Solve the cube puzzle move the red cube to the red stand, yellow to yellow, and blue to blue
  3. Collect the wire cutter once all three cubes are placed, the wire cutter drops from the ceiling
  4. Search for the key check shelves around the mansion, but the key's spot can change between runs
  5. Grab the card key when the Locust is walking away, approach from behind and take the card key it is carrying
  6. Open the exit use the wire cutter on the wiring, the key on the lock, and the card key on the reader, each as separate interactions
  7. Escape head through the door and follow the bright corridor all the way out
03

Escaping the dark map — Light Out

Step
In short Light Out is a completely different escape from Light On — your only goal is to activate all five generators and then reach the exit.

The dark map has limited visibility, so take a moment when you spawn to note what the generators look like and where the exit might be. The cube-and-key steps from Light On do not apply here. If a generator won't respond when you interact with it, look nearby for a fuel can and fill it up before trying again. Keep a mental count of how many generators you've started, because five is the number you're aiming for.

  1. Get your bearings identify what the generators look like and roughly where the exit is before moving far
  2. Activate generators one at a time follow the on-screen prompt for each one you find
  3. Find fuel cans if a generator doesn't respond, search nearby for a fuel can and top it up
  4. Count as you go track how many generators you have activated so you know when you reach five
  5. Head to the exit once the fifth generator is running, move to the exit or lever right away
  6. Trust the current prompts if something looks different from older videos, go by what the game shows you now
04

Surviving the Locust

Tips
In short The Locust announces itself through sound, so stop whatever you're doing the moment the audio changes and focus on breaking its line of sight.

The Locust doesn't appear silently — its heavy footsteps and breathing get louder as it closes in, which gives you a window to react. The key habit is stopping an interaction the moment you hear it and moving before it rounds the corner. Running straight down a long corridor almost never works; what works is putting walls, corners, and low passages between you and it so it can't see you.

Tips worth knowing
  • Stop interacting with shelves, generators, or cubes the moment the footsteps or breathing get louder
  • Cut corners and duck through low passages rather than sprinting in a straight line
  • Never start a long interaction in a room with only one exit
  • Pick your escape route before you begin grabbing any important item
  • Don't try to fight the Locust — getting out is the only objective
05

When you're stuck and can't escape

Check
In short Work through your inventory and each exit interaction one by one before assuming something is broken, then switch servers if nothing responds.

Getting stuck at the exit is one of the most common problems, and it almost always comes down to a missing item or a skipped interaction. Go through the checks below in order. If everything looks correct and the exit still won't open, this game is in pre-alpha and genuine bugs do occur — your best move is to join a fresh server and start over.

  • Light On confirm you are carrying the wire cutter, the key, and the card key at the same time
  • Light On check that all three coloured cubes are still sitting on the correct stands
  • Light On interact with the exit wiring, keyhole, and card reader as three separate actions, not all at once
  • Light Out count your activated generators and make sure the total is five, not four
  • Light Out check that you are close enough to see the on-screen prompt before concluding a generator is broken
  • Any map look near where a teammate went down, since a key item may have dropped there
  • If nothing responds despite everything being correct, leave and join a new server
06

Playing with others — splitting responsibilities

Table
In short Dividing roles at the start keeps the group spread out and reduces the chance of everyone attracting the Locust to the same spot.

When multiple players crowd into the same room or chase the same item, it tends to draw the Locust toward the most important parts of the map. Splitting into roles from the beginning avoids that. When telling teammates where something is, use landmarks like 'green exit' or 'second generator' rather than 'here' or 'near me'.

Scoutmoves through the mansion finding items, generators, and exits, then reports locations to the group
Lookoutwatches for the Locust and warns teammates before it reaches them
Carrierphysically moves cubes, fuel cans, and other objectives to where they need to go
Card key runnerapproaches the Locust from behind to grab the card key, or draws it away from teammates who are mid-task
Buddy rulewhoever is holding a critical item stays near someone who knows where the exit is, not off alone
Escape disciplineif everyone runs from the Locust in the same direction, the whole group leads it straight to the work area
07

Safety and comfort while playing

Warn
In short This game has jump scares, darkness, and sudden loud sounds, so adjust your setup before you start rather than after.

House of The Locust includes dark environments, chase sequences, and sudden audio events. These aren't reasons not to play, but they're worth knowing about so you can set yourself up comfortably. Playing with a friend or a parent nearby makes a real difference if you find horror stressful.

Worth watching out for
If loud sounds or jump scares bother you, lower the volume until you can still hear footsteps but the sudden noises aren't overwhelming
Stop and take a break if you start feeling genuinely scared or unwell the game will still be there
Check any Robux purchase with a parent before confirming it the basic escape is playable without spending anything
Never use external scripts, speed hacks, or cheat tools they put your account and login details at risk
Don't share your name, school, address, password, or any verification codes in the in-game chat

Common questions

FAQ

Can I finish the game solo?

Yes, Light On's escape sequence is completable alone. Your first solo run will be rough simply because you won't know the layout yet, so treat it as a scouting trip and focus on finding the exit and learning where you can hide. If you play with a friend, splitting into a lookout and a collector makes both jobs easier.

The green exit won't open — what am I missing?

Make sure you have the wire cutter, the key, and the card key all at the same time, then interact with the exit wiring, the keyhole, and the card reader as three separate actions. If a teammate has gone down, check near where they fell in case a needed item dropped there. If all three items are confirmed and the exit still won't respond, it may be a pre-alpha bug — join a new server and try again.

Can I play with the sound off?

You can, but the Locust's footsteps and breathing are your main warning system, so muting the game removes your biggest advantage. If loud or sudden noises are the problem, turn the volume down to a level where you can still hear movement rather than switching it off entirely.

A generator or cube won't let me interact with it — what's wrong?

First check that you're standing close enough to see the on-screen prompt, and confirm no teammate is already interacting with the same object. Walk away, come back, and try again. If other objects in the same server also stop responding, that points to a server-side bug, and rejoining a fresh server is the fix.

Do I need to spend Robux to reach the ending?

No — the full escape sequence on both maps is available without spending anything. Paid options may appear during your session, but none of them are required to attempt or complete the escape. If you do want to spend Robux, go over the details with a parent before confirming.
